OXFORD â¢Â As litigation over unclear residency requirements awaits a ruling from the stateâs highest court, Oxfordâs election commission on Tuesday night certified a candidate for June s general election despite previous eligibility concerns.
The commission voted this week to certify Afton Thomas, the Democratic candidate for the boardâs Ward 2 seat.
Commissioners previously questioned whether she should appear on the ballot because she had not lived in the ward sheâs hoping to represent for at least two years. A recent opinion from Attorney General Lynn Fitch s office states that a 2019 election law requires candidates for municipal office to live in both the ward and municipality they wish to represent for at least that amount of time.
ABERDEEN â A special election for the Ward 1 alderman seat April 20 will determine if Nicholas Holliday will maintain his seat on the board or if Robert Devaull will be the next alderman. Confusion last week about where itâs being held, though, was yet to be determined as of press time.
Devaull challenged the results of last Juneâs runoff for the seat in a case heard in Monroe County Circuit Court in January.
Special Judge Jeff Weill, Sr., who presided over the election contest, ordered for the new election in February, citing a number of issues such as irregularities with ballots, violations of distance rules from the polling place on election day, in addition to disturbances at the precinct and violation of sample ballot law.
A Mississippi judge ordered a new runoff election for an Aberdeen election following over three-quarters of absentee ballots being cast in the June Democratic runoff election found to be invalid.
