How acquiring debating skills changed the lives of six differently-abled individuals in the UAE
The UAE government announced a five-year strategy for people of determination to spotlight the country’s longstanding commitment to inclusion in diverse areas, including employment, health, housing as well as opportunities for learning and development. Project Determination — the world’s first debate led by People of Determination — is an extension of that vision.
It harbours the very essence of the government-led initiative — to showcase the many special talents and capabilities of people of determination when given a suitable and empowering platform. This exemplary endeavour has been the labour of love for high-school student Shrish Janarthanan. The 17-year-old Dubai College student has been a debate champion in several national and international competitions, including Emirates Debate Championship and Indian Rotary Club Debates. What started as a mere after-school hobby has now led him to dedicate substantial time and efforts, alongside his school commitments, to establish his very own debate programme, DebatePro.

Athletes with special needs make history at tough Hatta endurance race

A dozen athletes with special needs celebrated after finishing a gruelling endurance challenge in Hatta at the weekend.
They cycled across mountainous terrain for 13km, set off on a trail run for 5.5km and kayaked for a kilometre along with more than 300 people from across the country in the Garmin Quest race on Friday.
It was the first time a group of people with special needs in the UAE took part in a demanding adventure sport challenge.

Last week we talked about ex-Google AI researcher Timnit Gebru who was fired from the company after digging into the ethics behind advances in AI. An article from the Thomson Reuters Foundation asked an important follow-up question: What does the future of AI look like if researchers aren't allowed to look into the repercussions of the technology on minorities? Gebru is a Black woman who co-founded the nonprofit Black in AI and is also "one of the top AI ethics researchers in the entire world," according to a colleague if there were anyone who should be looking into the effects of AI on minorities, it sounds like it would be her. After her firing, there has been concern that while minorities are hired to fill quotas, they aren't necessarily there to represent their demographics. "As a Black woman, these companies know the work you do, and the communities you care about, and they want the validation you bring to their business," said Aerica Shimizu Banks, another former Google employee.
