When the news broke that Taj Burrow was going to slip into a jersey again, pro surfing fans were excited. Burrow is a legend, and his retirement from the tour was a blow. He spent nearly two decades going around the world as a competitor and had one of the most celebrated careers in surfing. For any grom, Taj was inspirational. So when Griffin Colapinto and Jack Freestone came up against him at the Rottnest event, it likely was a wild experience.
“Taj Burrow has made a huge contribution to the sport of surfing,” said WSL Commissioner, Kieren Perrow after Burrow’s retirement. “He is a surfer who inspired generations and sparked an approach that has raised the level of performance surfing in competition to unprecedented levels. The WSL is extremely fortunate to have had Taj on tour for nearly two decades and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his life.”

NBN News | MATE VERSES MATE IN NEWCASTLE CUP QUARTERFINALS

It will be a battle of the Merewether boardriders when Morgan Cibilic and Ryan Callinan surf against each other in the quarter finals.
Two out of three local surfers progressed in the Newcastle Cup this morning, with adopted Novocastrian Julian Wilson being barrelled out by Adriano de Souza.
In the following heat Cibilic’s impressive form despite a fractured toe continued, the tour rookie easily beating Central Coast hope Wade Carmichael.
While Callinan wasn’t as strong off the mark against Owen Wright.
The 28-year-old waited until half the heat was over to make a move on his fellow Aussie opponent.

Adopted Novocastrian Julian Wilson dominated in his elimination heat.
A total wave score of 12.80 sending him straight through to the Round of 32, where he’ll face Jack Robinson.
Meanwhile, Port Macquarie surfer Matt Banting wasn’t as lucky.
Currently number one of the Qualifying Series, commentators predicted Banting would upset the competition.
A last minute 6.17 wasn’t enough to beat Owen Wright and Adriano de Souza.

Phil Spector, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who in April 2009 was convicted of murdering actress
Lana Clarkson, died Saturday night in prison custody, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a Sunday morning news release.  He was 81, sources indicate, though the official press release said he was 80.
The Department of Corrections said Spector died “of natural causes” at 6:35 p.m. Saturday “at an outside hospital” near Stockton, Calif.  A medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.
