AirTags Removed From Sale Over Safety Concerns

Australia retailer pulls AirTag over safety concerns
Officeworks responds to reports that AirTag battery is dangerously easy for children to access.
The Australian retailer Officeworks has stopped selling Apple's AirTag object tracker, following reports that its battery can easily be removed by children.
The move, first reported by Gizmodo and since confirmed by Officeworks, was done quietly at first, with shop-floor staff unaware that the product had been pulled.
One Apple fan in Keswick, South Australia, described a mystifying shopping experience on Reddit. They tried to buy an AirTag using a voucher, but employees were unable to find any, despite seeing stock on the system and remembering selling the devices a few days previously.

AirTag needs a Bluetooth signal. The signal taps into billions of Bluetoothenabled Apple devices around the world. If you have attached the AirTag to your wallet and have misplaced it, you will be notified when an iPhone or MacBook comes within range. It also sends a custom message and phone number to the person who finds the wallet, provided you reported the item lost and entered a phone number.

When Apple unveiled new products at its 20 April event, the company was in an uncharacteristically vague mood. It gave a precise release date for the AirTag and purple iPhone 12 (30 April, today), but would only say that the new iPad Pro, iMac and Apple TV 4K would be released in the "second half of May".
Now 9to5Mac reports that several sources claim to have an exact date. Jon Prosser, who in the past has often been right about this type of information, is among several leakers who say that the launch will take place on 21 May.

In addition to new iMacs and new iPads, Apple introduced its long-awaited and much-rumored $29 AirTag at its Spring Loaded event this week. But what exactly are these trackers supposed to do anyway? How do they know where your gear is at all times? And how are they different from the Bluetooth trackers already on the market?

Not for the first time, Apple is launching a hardware product in a category that’s already well established, but trying to make its implementation better than everything else that’s been done before. The most well-known trackers in the space are the ones made by Tile, like the $25 Tile Mate, but Samsung SmartTags and the Chipolo range (which also starts at $25) are also competing for your dollars.

Apple held its annual event yesterday where they unveiled the new AirTag to help us find everything we lose. The AirTag will help users find lost items through Apple’s “Find My” app. The AirTags are small and round tracking devices that can be attached everything like purses, bags or keys. The tags come with various case options and keychain dongles so you can attach it to your bag or keys. You can also customize the AirTag with emoji symbols. The Find My app will be able to guide guide users to a lost AirTag using a combination of sound, haptics and visual feedback. A built in speaker will play sounds to help you locate your lost item and if it's farther away, you can put it on “Lost Mode” which will leverage Apple’s Find My network across everyone’s devices. To ensure privacy, AirTags’ location data and location history is physically stored inside the device. If you come across someone else's lost AirTag, you can tap it with your iPhone and it will take you to a website where you can contact the owner by phone. The item is also water- and dust-resistant. The AirTag uses Bluetooth LE (low-energy) and is able to get a year of battery life. Once the battery dies, you can just replace the battery.
