Joining us to talk about some of the issues surrounding that is Andy Greenberg of wired. Mr. Greenberg, what happened to you in st. Louis . Guest well, i, for a couple of years now, three years, in fact, ive been talking to these two hackers, Charlie Miller and chris, who are two very brilliant hackers who have found vulnerabilities in all kinds of things, you know, from an iphone to mac books to the last couple of years theyve been focused on cars and attacking the Network Inside of a vehicle through the internet. So they invited me to come down to st. Louis ....
Things from iphones to macbooks, and the last double years they have been focused on cars. They invited me to come down where charlie lived. He put me in a jeep, and told me to drive up the highway. I knew that they were going to launch some attack from his living room 10 miles away, i didnt know what. I was on the highway and the radio starts blasting kanye west. I cant turn it down or off. The windshield wipers start going of their own accord. Fluid, obscuring my vision. A picture of the guys in track suits appears on the computer unit called unit called uc onnect on the dashboard. That was a good demonstration of what they could do, and then they cut the transmission of the vehicle altogether. I found myself unable to accelerate with cars lining up behind me and wasnt by. Was in my Rearview Mirror honking. I came close to panicking, but it was yelling into my speakerphone to these two hackers, begging them to make the car work ....

I rolled off the off ramp and did get the transmission being gauged but they had proven a point it is a terrifying experience to have someone take control of this computer on wheels. Host how did they do it . It is a big piece of research with a lot of steps but the vulnerability is in the head unit and said dash board known as u connect it has a wifi hotspot and one service that was not protected. So they could call into that through cellular connections over the Sprint Network that they attach to their computer to attack it remotely over the internet to exploit that vulnerability. From there the second step to rewrite the firm where but this time on the controller area that controls all of physical components from steering to breaks and transmissions so from their now they can send a c ....
