Experts Warn Acknowledgement Of Armenian Genocide Risks Drawing U.S. Into WWI

WASHINGTON Urging national leaders to “tread carefully,” top experts from the Council on Foreign Relations warned Thursday that acknowledging the Armenian genocide could risk drawing the U.S. into WWI. “The mass killings of the Armenian people was a tragedy, but we fear acknowledging the ethnic cleansing of one million Armenians now would only provoke the Ottoman Empire,” said Steven A. Cook, who added that recognizing the brutal mass murder of Armenians could also upset the delicately balanced alliance system created by Otto von Bismarck. “Nothing is more important than American neutrality. President Biden was elected on a platform of neutrality, after all. The U.S. has successfully avoided entering the European conflict for over a century, and we don’t want a conflict with the sultan and his allies now.” At press time, the Senate had passed a resolution declaring war on Germany.

Biden expected to formally recognize Armenian Genocide: report

Sources close to the matter told The New York Times that Biden is expected to make the announcement on Saturday, which would be the 106th anniversary of the start of a multi-year ethnic cleansing campaign that began during WWI and ended in 1922.
Biden would be the first U.S. President to recognize the actions against the Armenian people as a genocide, the Times notes, though former President Reagan made a reference to the genocide once in 1981 when discussing the Holocaust.

As a presidential candidate last year, Biden had previously indicated his support for recognition, writing in a Medium post to commemorate Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day: “If we do not fully acknowledge, commemorate, and teach our children about genocide, the words ‘never again’ lose their meaning. ....

Lawmakers on Thursday issued statements of praise for President Biden following reports that he plans to officially recognize the killing of more than 1 million Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire more than a century ago as a genocide.
The New York Times first reported the plans Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the matter, and U.S. officials later shared details on the anticipated move with The Associated Press.
The statement by Biden, expected to come on or before Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day on Saturday, would make him the first U.S. president to officially recognize the multiyear ethnic cleansing campaign as a genocide, though the Times noted Wednesday that President Reagan made a reference to the genocide once in 1981 when discussing the Holocaust. ....
