Handling COVID-19 a 'disaster' for front-line workers, researchers say

Far too many front-line workers in the health sector have been, and continue to be, “needlessly sacrificed” by being inadequately protected on the job during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a global group of independent researchers that includes several based at the University of Windsor.
The failure by health and government authorities to properly respond to the public health crisis has been “unbelievable … from an occupational health perspective, this has been a disaster,” said James Brophy, an adjunct professor at the University of Windsor’s sociology department and an occupational health researcher.

Like the third lockdown announced last week and the second stay-at-home order this week, largely to check runaway spread in other regions, Ontario’s edict cancelling elective surgeries will be bitter news to people whose procedures are postponed, God forbid, a second or third time.

You don’t want to end up here. The odds aren’t good.
This is the intensive care unit at Windsor Regional Hospital’s Metropolitan campus, and these are critically ill COVID-19 patients.
One-hundred-and-eighteen COVID patients have died at the hospital, most of them since case numbers began surging in November.
“It’s gruelling when you see this, how sad it is,” said critical care physician Dr. Natalie Malus, medical director of the ICU. “It’s a lot to take in over and over and over again. We deal with death a lot. But it feels like we’re seeing so much more of it, and that’s really difficult.”
