correspondent, matthew chance, is following all these developments. >> reporter: wolf, still a degree of uncertainty in kyrgyzstan, but one question is starting to be anxioused at least. the status and whereabouts of the country's president, back87, he fled bishkek as the protests got out of hands, protests that the interim government now says left 75 people dead and more than 1,000 injured. in a statement posted on a prominent news website president bakiyev is quoted as blaming the opposition for the violence and refusing to resign. the president was also interviewed on an independent russian radio station here in moscow, on which he confirmed that he's still in kyrgyzstan, in fact, in the south of the country, ending speculation that he has gone into some kind of exile. the big question now, though, is whether he will accept defeat and step down, or attempt to
levers. they say they control the army, the security forces, and despite the fact that president bakiyev said he isn't going to give up power he admitted today he doesn't have any power to hold over the new interim government. >> what is the opposition leader saying about the air base we know is crucial for our troops who are at war? >> reporter: the manas air base, some of the opposition leaders in the past have said they would like to see it closed. but today when i spoke with roza otunbayeva she really stressed, give us time. we need to talk about this. for now nothing has changed. the status quo hasn't changed. we also have to remember they just basically overthrew the government yesterday. they have a lot on their plate right now and it doesn't seem like this is going to be the most pressing issue for them to attack. so for now it looks like manas is going to be safe.
