This is new day, and this morning, new signs that states across the country are straining to meet the reality of the coronavirus pandemic in and no signs that the crisis is being addressed seriously at the National Level. At least 12 states in puerto rico reporting record hospitalizations, and there were states, by the way, including texas, florida, ohio, near records here. A state like ohio, we havent talked about in a while. This is a national issue. Floridas Miamidade County ran out of icu beds yesterday. Theyre converting other beds now to meet the needs. Listen to what Maryland Governor larry hogan, a republican, writes this morning. He says, ive watched as the president downplayed the outbreak severity and as the white house failed to issue public warnings, draw up a 50state strategy or dispatch medical gear or lifesaving ventilators from the National Stockpile to american hospitals. Eventually, it was clear that waiting around for the president to run the nations response was hopeless. If we delayed any longer, wed be condemning more of our citizens to suffering and death and this morning we have heard from federal experts on this show who say its time to just move beyond the federal government. An influential model from the university of washington predicts that the death toll could nearly double from where we are today. Now, the model does project the number could be lowered by 70,000 if everybody wore a mask. The nationwide death toll topped 160,000 overnight with 1,200 new deaths reported. Thats, what, the fourth straight day weve had more than a thousand deaths reported in this country. And as we watch those numbers tick up, the economic pain is growing in this country.
