Covid-19: analysis of protein interactions as a route to new drugsA multidimensional view of the coronavirus
What exactly happens when the corona virus SARS-CoV-2 infects a cell? In an article published in Nature, a team from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry paints a comprehensive picture of the viral infection process. For the first time, the interaction between the coronavirus and a cell is documented at five distinct proteomics levels. This knowledge will help to gain a better understanding of the virus and find potential starting points for therapies. ....

Researchers awarded $3 million to study neural dynamics of mental disorders

 E-Mail
ATLANTA Georgia State University researchers have received a five-year, $3 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to develop new strategies to identify mood disorders using whole brain dynamics, which considers changes in the shape, size or location of brain networks, as well as changes in the connections between brain networks.
The researchers will use the approaches they develop to integrate four-dimensional brain imaging with clinical and cognitive data to identify clues about how mental illness presents in the brain.
Distinguished University Professor of Psychology Vince Calhoun, director of the Center for Translational Research in Neuroimaging and Data Science (TReNDS), is the lead researcher on the project. ....

International team identifies genetic link between face and brain shape

 E-Mail
An interdisciplinary team led by KU Leuven and Stanford has identified 76 overlapping genetic locations that shape both our face and our brain. What the researchers didn t find is evidence that this genetic overlap also predicts someone s behavioural-cognitive traits or risk of conditions such as Alzheimer s disease. This means that the findings help to debunk several persistent pseudoscientific claims about what our face reveals about us.
There were already indications of a genetic link between the shape of our face and that of our brain, says Professor Peter Claes from the Laboratory for Imaging Genetics at KU Leuven, who is the joint senior author of the study with Professor Joanna Wysocka from the Stanford University School of Medicine. But our knowledge on this link was based on model organism research and clinical knowledge of extremely rare conditions, Claes continues. We set out to map the genetic link between individuals face and brain shape much more ....

SwRI researchers part of two collaborative teams receive SAMF bioscience grants

SwRI researchers part of two collaborative teams receive SAMF bioscience grants
Collaborative teams that include Southwest Research Institute staff received two of six recently awarded San Antonio Medical Foundation (SAMF) bioscience grants. SwRI, in collaboration with UT Health San Antonio and University Health System, received a nearly $200,000 grant to develop machine learning algorithms for cancer detection. A team from SwRI, UT Health San Antonio, The University of Texas at San Antonio and Texas Biomedical Research Institute also received a grant of nearly $200,000 for its work to identify drug molecules that interfere with the entry of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, into human cells. ....
