Michigan 58, Penn State 57

Michigan won a basketball game shooting 31.5% from the field. It was a horrific experience to watch and the quality of basketball was very poor, but Michigan got a victory on the road in State College and every win is big at this point in the season. The reason? Penn State shot the ball very poorly and the Wolverines went 19/22 at the line, hitting all their free throws late. In this ugly wrestling match in the mud, it was just enough to get it done.
The first half was a dramatic difference between the feelingsball sense of how things were going and the actual score. Michigan struggled offensively to get much of anything going, while Penn State, a terrible midrange team, started knocking down junk shots at a high percentage. Sam Sessons feasted in iso against Kobe Bufkin, getting to the rack with ease, and even when the Wolverines were able to put up good defense, the Nittany Lions knocked down their shots. The Wolverines trailed by 11 points with four minutes to go and the opposing crowd started to get involved. The team's tournament odds were fading in a hurry.
That's when the Wolverines put the engine in gear and closed the half well. An 11-0 run, adjusted upwards from 10-0 at halftime after a two point shot was revised to a three, got Michigan back into the game just before the break. Caleb Houstan and Brandon Johns Jr. both knocked down three pointers for a Wolverines team that had previously been ice cold from distance. A switch to zone from man-to-man on defense helped keep the PSU offense at bay, and the Lions didn't help themselves with a couple horrendous turnovers. After a great pass from DeVante' Jones hit Johns to set up a layup at the horn, Michigan was back in it. Despite the feeling of impending doom that was pervasive in the first half, the score was somehow tied at 34.
Hunter Dickinson didn't make nearly as many of these shots as normal tonight [Wilcomes]
The second half was substantially worse than the first half from a quality of play standpoint. That could be summed up in the following statistic: Michigan won the first four minutes of the second half 2-0. Both teams struggled to hit open shots, and that was epitomized by a scuffling Hunter Dickinson, who shot 6/20 from the field, missing a litany of shots he typically makes. Penn State was no better on offense, and the field goal percentage stats for the two squads sank like stones. The second half oscillated between small Michigan leads and tied games, never expanding to a point of comfort, but the Maize & Blue were generally in front.
John Harrar made a pair of free throws with 3:41 to go, and the score was tied at 48. Eli Brooks missed a layup, Dickinson grabbed the rebound, and he got hacked. The big man drained both free throws, beginning the clear theme of the final four minutes, which was Michigan's excellence at the free throw line. An Eli Brooks jumper a minute later put Michigan up 52-48, and the Wolverines began to put the clamps on defensively. Jalen Pickett missed a three pointer and the Wolverines held the ball with under two minutes to go, still up four. A basket would potentially end it, but Jones fired an inbounds pass off a PSU player, which ricocheted back off himself, and out of bounds for a turnover.
That lifeline thrown to the Nittany Lions didn't go very far. Sam Sessoms missed a layup despite having a step on Terrance Williams II, and Dickinson got the rebound. Michigan wound the clock down under a minute and had an open hook shot for Dickinson, but the ball hit off the heel and PSU snagged the board. After Micah Shrewsberry called timeout, Seth Lundy drew a shooting foul. Lundy went 1/2 at the line, and with Michigan holding a three point lead and under 30 seconds left, it turned into a free throw battle. Caleb Houstan and Eli Brooks would combine to go 6/6 at the line down the stretch, never letting the home team hold the ball down one score. Penn State nailed a three at the horn down four, which made the final margin one, but the game was over at this juncture. Final: 58-57 Michigan.
PSU didn't make many of these shots tonight either [Wilcomes]
The box score is a horror show to look at from an offensive standpoint. Dickinson led the team with 19, but again, shot 6/20 from the floor. Brooks scored 16 points on 4/9 from the field. The other three starters, Jones, Houstan, and Moussa Diabate, combined to go 4/17 from the floor, while Brandon Johns Jr. and Frankie Collins went 2/7 off the bench. The shots didn't fall, but Michigan hit 86.4% from the line, including all those late high-leverage free throws. An interesting development was Diabate being benched for a large stretch in the second half for the second consecutive game, leading to one segment with Johns playing the five. Jalen Pickett led PSU with 14, followed by Sessoms with 13. No other Lion scored in double digits.
Tonight's victory began a three games in five days stretch for Michigan, who face a compressed schedule over the final month of the season due to rescheduled contests. Thursday brings Purdue to Crisler, while Saturday brings Ohio State to town. Both are ranked in the top 25 and both represent opportunities for the vaunted marquee win that Michigan desperately needs. The Thursday game is scheduled for 9:00 PM EST and is set to be televised on ESPN. There is no content after the jump.

Purdue 82, Michigan 76

The extent to which you're satisfied with Michigan's loss in West Lafayette probably depends on how comfortable you are with moral victories when the Wolverines are 11-9 overall and 5-5 in the B1G. The visitors rolled into Mackey Arena in search of a marquee victory, and they did not get one. They did, however, hang around for the entire 40 minutes, staying in a game that seemed like it was sliding away at several key moments. Is that enough to be happy about? Again, that depends on who you are.
It started pretty ominously, with Eli Brooks airballing Michigan's first field goal attempt (it was a three-pointer), followed by Sasha Stefanovic nailing a three. A few minutes later, Caleb Houstan airballed Michigan's second three point attempt. Purdue had quickly sprinted out to a 20-8 lead and it rapidly appeared that Michigan was in huge trouble and a rout was on. That's around the point that the shots started to go down in rapid succession for the Wolverines, as the whole team heated up in a hurry. From airballing threes to suddenly knocking every shot, the half turned around fast.
Between the 9:57 mark and the 4:34 mark, Michigan hit five three pointers, on just eight attempts. Purdue's offense also began to dry up, continuing to find success inside (more on that later), but their three point shooting slowed down, while Michigan was sniping. Hunter Dickinson's expanded three point shot was on display during this period, making back-to-back threes at one juncture, and he could've made four threes had he not had his toe on the line for two attempts. The result? The Maize & Blue had worked their way back into the contest, down just 32-31 when Dickinson hit that second three pointer.
The threes suddenly started falling [Campredon]
Unfortunately, they didn't do enough in the final four minutes of the half to pull even, all the while the defense struggled to corral defensive rebounds and gave Purdue too many extra possessions. Purdue led by six at the break, 39-33, even though Michigan led in eFG% in the first frame (5/12 on threes!), because Purdue rebounded 42% of their misses. Another factor was the lack of whistles. In fact, Purdue didn't get whistled for a single foul in the first half. To be clear, the home team didn't commit many foul worthy plays, playing a clean half of basketball, but to go twenty minutes without a foul is a rare anomaly worth noting.
The second half featured a lot of Hunter Dickinson early on, scoring six of Michigan's first eleven points to begin the second stanza and pulling the Wolverines closer. He was avoiding fouls on defense, flashing his perimeter shooting, and battling inside. Michigan had dwindled the score to 45-44 with 16:51 to go in the contest, before Purdue surged on a 10-0 run supercharged by star guard Jaden Ivey. Matt Painter began to call ball screens for the explosive Ivey, a departure from the usual script for the team that calls the fewest ball screens in the B1G. Painter saw a matchup that Michigan remains extremely vulnerable to, and used his talent to exploit it ruthlessly. Ivey scored six straight points at the rack during that run, and it led to another moment when it seemed like the game was sliding away from the Wolverines.
Jace alert! [Campredon]
But again, Michigan kept fighting. They made very little progress in terms of clawing back to a tie, but they didn't let the contest get out of hand. After Purdue led 61-49 with 11:43 left, the Boilermaker lead never swelled beyond 12, but it also didn't get cut to five or less until there were under 6 minutes to go. Part of the success that Michigan found in stymying Purdue was going to a 1-2-2 full court press. They forced a ten second violation and limited the amount of time Purdue had in the shot clock to set up their offense once they actually got into the front court, slowing down an attack that was functioning at full power. Jace Howard saw the floor during this stretch, and was a key part of that defensive configuration, while Dickinson and the two senior guards, Brooks and DeVante' Jones, did the scoring.
A Dickinson jumper brought the score to 68-63 with 5:44 to go, and a couple minutes later it was 74-69. Michigan needed a couple stops to make this one more than a moral victory but their achilles heel, defensive rebounding, struck again. Purdue center Trevion Williams bricked the front end of a one-and-one, but Purdue snagged the offensive board, set up their offense, and Ivey converted on a layup. DeVante' Jones responded by hitting a three to cut it to 76-72, the closest the margin had been since early in the second half.
The Wolverines got the stop they needed, but Trevion Williams stripped Dickinson on the baseline and a review gave the ball to the Boilermakers thanks to the Charles Matthews vs. Purdue 2018 Review rule. Ivey drew a foul, hit both free throws, and then Jones' pass deflected off Dickinson and out of bounds for another turnover. 78-72 with one minute to go, and Purdue held the ball. At this point, it was functionally over. The home team made their free throws, and Michigan would never get the margin any closer. Final score: 82-76.
Trevion Williams was also dominant today [Campredon]
It was another phenomenal offensive performance from Dickinson, 28 points in 36 minutes on 12/17 from the field (2/3 from three), and perfect at the line. Grabbing only two defensive rebounds and four turnovers will haunt him, though. Jones posted 13 points on 5/7 from the field (with three turnovers), while Eli Brooks and Caleb Houstan were much rougher. Moussa Diabate was a non-factor offensively, scoring only two points in 17 minutes. Kobe Bufkin and Brandon Johns Jr. each hit threes for their only points, while Terrance Williams II scored six points in 18 minutes to lead bench scorers. Frankie Collins played eight minutes that were rather rough offensively, missing two threes that weren't close.
Despite all those high notes, 55.8% from the field and 8/18 from three as a team, Michigan could not get stops consistently. Time and time again we have seen that this defense is just not good enough, allowing Purdue to shot >50% from the field despite going very cold from three. The Boilermakers were 62.5% from two (!!!!). They rebounded a shade under 40% of their misses, destroying Michigan inside and exploiting the PNR. Trevion Williams was 7/8 from the field while Zach Edey was 5/12 and they combined to snatch eight offensive rebounds. Only Ivey going 0/6 from three held Purdue from scoring 90+.
In all, Michigan had a solid showing of fight and resolve, but they have to start winning some of these games against top tier B1G competition. Moral victories against Purdue and Illinois on the road won't help you much when you don't have any marquee victories on your resume and you're barely above .500. The good news is that Michigan has more shots coming this week. After an easier game @PSU on Tuesday, they get a rematch with these Boilermakers at Crisler on Thursday, as well as a top 25 Ohio State team at Crisler on Saturday. This week could very well make or break Michigan's tourney chances.
The game on Tuesday is scheduled for 9:00 PM and will be on ESPN2. There is no content after the jump.

Michigan 83, Maryland 64

With seconds dwindling in an easy Michigan win over Maryland, Jace Howard hoisted a three from way downtown. He nailed it. The Crisler Center crowd went wild and it cemented what the night was like for the Wolverines. The Wolverines got a much needed boost from Hunter Dickinson returning to the lineup, and like he normally does against the Maryland Terrapins, Dickinson feasted. Everything went right tonight, and it was a much, much needed victory, snapping a three-game Michigan losing streak.
The Maize & Blue found the lone team in the B1G who might be having a worse season relative to expectations, and they didn't waste that opportunity. Against the Danny Manning-led Terps, it was a blowout from the beginning to the end, wire-to-wire domination. It all started with Dickinson, who showcased the diverse skillset that he has developed. The Maryland-native hung 21 on his home-state team on 10/14 from the field. He hit a three-pointer off the dribble, he dished out six assists, and gobbled up six rebounds. Meanwhile, Maryland center Qudus Wahab mustered just four points in thirteen minutes. This was a reminder of how much Michigan missed the 7'1" big man during his COVID pause.
Michigan led 11-4, then 20-9, and the tone was set for the rest of the night. The Wolverines' defense was dominant for wide stretches of the game, asserting itself in style. The Terps went over four minutes in the first half stuck at 14 points, and scored just 19 total in the first 20 minutes. There was another, nearly three minute stretch where Maryland went scoreless, spinning its tires but unable to find little traction against the Michigan defense, which looked much sharper and well-coached. Offense opened up a bit more in the second half for Maryland, once the game was out of question, but when the margin was tight, Michigan was strong on its own end.
FRANKIE! FRANKIE! FRANKIE! [Campredon]
Though Dickinson dominated the day on offense, two freshman were the storylines. Caleb Houstan finally snapped out of his funk, going 6/7 from the field and 3/4 from three. It's hard to understate how big that is for the team. An improved Houstan is nearly a prerequisite if Michigan is to reverse its season and make the tournament, given the dearth of other quality wings on the roster. Not just was Houstan sharper shooting the ball, but he looked more engaged defensively too, a sign that his mind may have been reset to some extent. Seeing whether that continues forward is a huge storyline to pay attention to.
The other freshman development was Juwan Howard's use of a Frankie Collins-Kobe Bufkin backcourt very early in the contest. Howard let the younger kids get a run, and it was Collins who wowed the home crowd. He started it off with an electric-coast-to-coast layup and then punctuated his appearance with a leaping finish on a very difficult lob, which was simply jawdropping. Collins also had a pair of nice assists and looked comfortable running the point, though his shooting woes from the perimeter were still there. Still, it was a good sign to build on.
Also a solid night from the other PG [Campredon]
The other half of that tandem, Kobe Bufkin, was not memorable. He was held scoreless in seventeen minutes of play, with one three being way off the mark. Perhaps it's an "ask again later" about him. Though Collins won the heart of Michigan Twitter, the other PG, DeVante' Jones, had a nice night as well, 12 points, including two three-pointers, and one of his patented floaters. Moussa Diabate had 14 points and six rebounds, but the wildness and foul trouble (he committed four fouls) were still there. Beyond that, Eli Brooks had a quiet seven points, Jace Howard had a career-high five points, and Jaron Faulds made another appearance with Brandon Johns Jr. still out, hitting one shot.
Michigan is back up over .500 at 8-7 and 2-3 in the Big Ten, with several games still needing to be made up. The next contest is on Sunday at 3:30 PM in another important matchup, as the Wolverines head to Bloomington to face Indiana. Another winnable game for a team that needs all the wins it can get. That game is slated to be on CBS.
