Playing politics with science!

It is obvious that the only way out of this disastrous pandemic is through science––the use of vaccines that have been introduced in double quick time due to scientific ingenuity. It is the duty of politicians to refrain from playing politics with science.

peniya episode. We had our Health Minister freely advertising the concoction by ingesting it in her office and wasting the valuable time of academics by instructing them to test it for efficacy. Getting a pretty bad attack of Covid-19 demonstrated the idiocy of her action but she continues unashamedly to be our Minister of Health!

What do Covid vaccines cost - and who is paying over the odds?

But while the figures on how many vaccines are being administered are clear-cut, the prices being paid by countries worldwide for Covid jabs are all over the place. With governments worldwide vying to secure doses of the various vaccines being rolled out, some nations are paying well over the odds as different deals are struck.
Figures released by the National Audit Office show that the UK has spent a total of £12bn on its vaccination campaign so far. The bill includes £2.9bn paid for a total of 267 million doses of five different coronavirus vaccines.
The UK is believed to have spent between £24 and £28 per dose on the Moderna jab, the Daily Mail reports. The domestically produced Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine cost the government around £3 per jab, according to the BBC, while the Pfizer/BioNTech jab has a price tag of around £15.

So far, there are two vaccines available in Switzerland, those from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna. Demand far outstrips supply, but the recent approval of Moderna’s vaccine by regulator Swissmedic means that Switzerland “can now significantly increase our vaccination campaign”, according to Christoph Berger, president of the Federal Commission for Vaccinations.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 23 — Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin today announced that the Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca will be procured through direct negotiations, with prices received straight from the manufacturer.
In a press conference at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Khairy shared that Malaysia is also in negotiations with Pfizer to increase the amount purchased by another 20 per cent if the need arises.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22 ― A healthcare watchdog has defended the government from criticism of its effort to secure Covid-19 vaccines, calling most of the attacks baseless “misinformation, disinformation, and conspiracy theories” by “opportunists”.
Among those found spreading the false information were politicians, noted the Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy that expressed concern over the potential for such attacks to undermine and erode public confidence in ongoing efforts to secure safe and effective vaccines.
