Hackers are using fake messages to break into WhatsApp accounts

ITPro the incident reflects how easy it is for attackers to acquire users' first factor of authentication, username, and password.
“Messaging apps present a number of challenges to individuals and corporate data security. The rise of significant data breaches across high profile organizations is providing threat actors with vast pools of user accounts to exploit via phishing attacks on messaging apps using those stolen credentials,” Agca said.
“Added to that, we see seismic events like the pandemic driving mobile device usage, and high-profile incidents such as the personal information of members of Parliament from the UK Conservative party app in recent years, further exacerbating the issue.”

Stanford's Cyber Policy Center confirmed on Feb. 12 that tools from Shanghai-based company Agora were serving as the backbone of Clubhouse, which has gained thousands of new users in recent months thanks to celebrity speakers like Elon Musk, Oprah, Aston Kutcher and other business leaders.
Additionally, the observatory found that "a user's unique Clubhouse ID number and chatroom ID are transmitted in plaintext, and Agora would likely have access to users' raw audio, potentially providing access to the Chinese government."

Security professionals are considering questions over the privacy and wider security of hot new social network Clubhouse following a leak of private audio chats by a user who found a way to beat the system and stream them beyond the confines of the service.
The audio-only app launched last year but has flown under the radar until recently, largely because it remains invite only, which means its user base has been restricted to those “lucky” enough to be beckoned beyond the velvet rope. It is also currently only available for Apple iOS devices, limiting its spread.

A remote code vulnerability in the Android version of the file-sharing app SHAREit could allow hackers to tamper with the app's permissions, enabling them to steal sensitive data, security firm Trend Micro reports.
SHAREit, developed by the Serbia-based app maker of the same name, is a cross-platform sharing app that has had 1 billion downloads to mobile phones. Trend Micro, which informed the app maker about the flaw three months back, says the company has yet to respond. The Android version of the app is currently unavailable for download from the Google Play store.

Recently Uncovered Botnet Targets Android Devices

Researchers at the security firm Netlab have identified a previously undocumented botnet dubbed "Matryosh" that is targeting vulnerable Android devices to help build its network so it can conduct distributed denial-of-service attacks.
The Matryosh botnet, which the researchers discovered Jan. 25, looks for Android devices in which the smartphone manufacturer left the Android Debug Bridge feature - a diagnostics and debugging tool - unsecured and open to the internet, the report notes.
Other botnets are also taking advantage of the Android Debug Bridge feature when the tool is left unsecured. For example, in October 2020, Barracuda Networks discovered a botnet called "InterPlanetary Storm" that followed a similar pattern (see:
