Nigerian Court Grants EFCC Order to Freeze 1,146 Suspicious Company, Personal Accounts Linked to Foreign Exchange Manipulation

  Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja, on Wednesday, granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) an interim order to freeze 1,146 bank accounts belonging to individuals and companies being investigated for alleged offences bordering on unauthorized dealing in forex exchange, money laundering and terrorism financing.   The judge ordered that the accounts be frozen “pending conclusion of investigation."

The Central Bank of Nigeria has barred some microfinance banks, including Moniepoint, Opay and Kuda, from opening new accounts and accepting new customers.    The ban is over allegations that they were being used to funnel cryptocurrency and manipulate the naira’s value, sources familiar told Peoples Gazette on Monday.
