UCSD tests tallest building on top of earthquake simulator

This is at UCSD's Structural Engineering Center. More than 20 organizations worked for over 15 years to put it all together, so it was quite a relief that the test was a success.

Living with earthquakes in California: Here's what experts are doing to keep us safe

It's a danger we live with every day.
While scientists can't predict earthquakes, seismologists are using smartphones to give us a warning that shaking has started - enough time to seek shelter. But cellphone technology does not stop there.
Google engineers are using motion sensors built into Android phones to detect earthquakes as well. All it takes is a few seconds to set up your smartphone to be ready for the next big one.
Our special docuseries "California Dreaming" explores the challenges, solutions and people striving to keep the Golden State great, and the California Dream alive. Download our app on Roku, AppleTV, FireTV or AndroidTV to watch the special now on your TV!

Supercomputers Simulate 800,000 Years of California Earthquakes to Pinpoint Risks

Supercomputers Simulate 800,000 Years of California Earthquakes to Pinpoint Risks
Massive earthquakes are rare events—and the scarcity of information about them can blind us to their risks, especially when it comes to determining the danger to a specific location or structure.
Scientists are now working to improve the calculations of danger by combining maps and histories of known faults with the use of supercomputers to simulate potential shaking deep into the future in California. The method is described in an article just published in the
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.
“People  always want to know: When is the next ‘Big One’ coming,” said coauthor Bruce Shaw, a seismologist at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. “Chaos always gets in the way of answering that question. But what we can get at is

Magnitude 4.2 earthquake hits just south of Santa Cruz, felt across Bay Area

CONCORD, Calif. (KGO) -- A magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit near Gilroy Saturday night and was felt across the Bay Area.
The quake was centered in Aromas, Calif., 47 miles south of San Jose and hit at 8:01 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The USGS says the quake had a depth of 7.9 km.
Viewers from Santa Cruz to San Francisco let us know they felt the shake.
Meteorologist Drew Tuma says the earthquake was likely on the San Andreas fault, which is why it was felt so far.
Likely the reason we felt this earthquake in San Francisco even though we are 70+ miles away from the epicenter is because it looked to occur on the San Andreas Fault. Which then rippled north into the City. pic.twitter.com/H2BcofnBoJ— Drew Tuma (@DrewTumaABC7) January 17, 2021

>> historically the east coast doesn't get many earthquakes. this is the first we've had of this size in 67 years. so if this is so uncommon, do you think that, as you're saying you weren't so aware of this area in virginia, do you think it should be investigated for potentially bigger things to come? is this kind of a foreshadowing quake? >> it's always hard to say, is it a foreshadowing quake. i don't think it is. there have been big kwquakes on the east coast, the 1886 charleston earthquake and 1927 off the grand banks in new england, those are the biggest two i know about, and of course the earthquakes that are to the west of this location in new madrid. it's the 200th anniversary of them this year. the question is, do they foresee more? in order to have really big earthquakes, you need to have really long faults.
