AS THE end of the travel ban on arriving foreigners from 36 areas affected by new and more contagious variants of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) nears, around 1,200 passengers have arrived at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) from these areas with travel restrictions.
GMR Megawide, MCIA’s operator, said all the passengers were returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs). Hence, they were exempt from the ban, which will end on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021. Also exempt are spouses of Filipino citizens.
The country’s Covid-19 Task Force first implemented the travel ban on passengers coming from the United Kingdom (UK) at the end of December in a bid to prevent the entry of the new, highly contagious UK variant.

Tourism suffered badly in 2020
THE CALL OF THE TIMES. Even while losing a lot from the absence of foreign and local tourists, the accommodation sector has been forced to shell out money to invest in safety and security measures as part of the new ways of doing business under the new normal. (Katlene P. Cacho)

CEBU'S tourism sector had been dubbed an "industry superstar" in 2019.
But a few months after, in March 2020, what was once the glory days of tourism and travel quickly vanished, crippling Cebu's local economy, displacing hundreds of thousands of workers and disrupting the operations of thousands of businesses that heavily relied on it.

LEADERS of business groups in Cebu are opposed to any new lockdown that the government might impose if a new variant of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), is detected in the country.
They were reacting to President Rodrigo Duterte’s statement on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020, that another lockdown was possible.
“Our economy is still reviving from the first lockdown, which is felt by all sectors, be it big or small. A second lockdown would be disastrous,” Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Felix Taguiam told SunStar Cebu.

CEBU’S domestic tourism will get a boost following the launch of “Stay Cebu, Celebrate Cebu,” a campaign geared toward enticing Cebuanos to travel around the city and stay in hotels.
Cebu City Tourism Commission chairperson Jocelyn Pesquera said the campaign will foster a collaboration atmosphere with the tourism stakeholders, particularly in the hospitality industry, to promote domestic tourism to offset the impact of the collapse of foreign arrivals in Cebu.
