The Battle of Lake Erie, the longest running stakes event hosted at MGM Northfield Park, has once again attracted a star-studded cast for its 2021 edition. The $200,000 event, which is carded as the 10th race on Saturday (June 5), features a competitive field of the sport’s best open pacers with a combined 287 victories.
Introducing the 2021 $200,000 Battle of Lake Erie field:
#1 Western Joe - This seven-year-old son of Western Ideal is the 7-2 second choice. Christopher Choate trains this East Coast stalwart and has named Aaron Merriman to drive. Merriman recently notched his 13,000th driving win, is the leading driver in North America, and is Northfield’s all-time winningest driver. Western Joe, who is owned by Anthony Ruggeri and Richard Tosies, is out of the Falcon Seelster mare Ante Fay. Falcon Seelster won the very first Battle of Lake Erie in 1986. Western Joe’s lifetime mark is 1:47.3 with a career bankroll of $821,008.

Manchego, a returning Dan Patch Award winner who won the Arthur J. Cutler Memorial in her 2021 debut, is the No. 1-ranked horse in this season’s first Hambletonian Society/Breeders Crown poll. The six-year-old female trotter received 20 of 35 first-place votes.
Six-year-old male pacer This Is The Plan, the MGM Borgata Series champion and the sport’s leading money-winner, was second in the rankings. He was followed by four-year-old male trotter Its Academic, three-year-old male pacer Abuckabett Hanover, and six-year-old female pacer Machnhope in rounding out the top five.
Its Academic counts the Charlie Hill Memorial among his wins while Machnhope was the Blue Chip Matchmaker Series champion. Abuckabett Hanover handed Perfect Sting his first career loss in a division of the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes earlier this month.

Century Farroh, Canada's 2020 Somebeachsomewhere Horse of the Year, rebounded off back-to-back runner-up performances at Scioto Downs’ top class on Saturday (May 22) to post a 1:49.4 victory in the $22,000 Open I Pace.
Driver Ronnie Wrenn Jr. jetted the five-year-old Mach Three stallion to the point from post 8, hitting the first quarter in :26.3 while enduring first-over pressure from Havefaithinme N. That rival remained at Century Farroh’s side through a :54.4 half before retreating into the backstretch, where then Springsteen sprung three-wide for a final-turn blitz by three-quarters in 1:22.1. However Century Farroh proved ready for the speed test, turning away Springsteen into the stretch and coasting to a two-and-a-quarter length victory over pocket-sitter GD Western Joe. Rockin In Heaven finished third.

Dale Spence To Ontario | Standardbred Canada

Having just completed his second winter as part of Dr. Ian Moore's southern operation, Dale Spence has opted to forgo a return to his Maritime base of operations in favour of plying his trade on the Ontario harness racing circuit, once it resumes — both to assist Moore and to build upon his almost 500 driving wins to date.
Spence, who, along with his fiancée, MacKenzie MacInnis, departed Prince Edward Island for Florida in the winter of 2020 to work with Moore, primarily in preparing two-year-olds for the races. He returned to P.E.I. in May and drove 46 winners — 12 of them in stakes — in an abbreviated season. Given the uncertainty of harness racing in Canada at the time, and despite mixed reviews of how government officials in the United States are handling pandemic mitigation, Spence and MacInnis reached out to Moore last fall about the possibility of re-upping with him for another winter stint in the Sunshine State.

As a number of Canadian-based horses and participants are making plans to race in various stateside jurisdictions, two O'Brien Award winners that were slated to return to Canada after training down in Florida will be heading north — but not back home to Canada just yet.

Trot Insider that 2020 Somebeachsomewhere Horse of the Year Century Farroh and 2020 Two-Year-Old of the Year Lawless Shadow will be headed to Ohio after logging their final prep miles — against each other — on Friday (April 23) at the Southern Oaks Training Center. Century Farroh (Dale Spence) cut fractions of :27.1, :54.3 and 1:22.3 with Lawless Shadow right on his helmet. Lawless Shadow paced home with a :28.1 final quarter to comfortably pace by his accomplished stablemate and trip the timer in a sharp lifetime best 1:51 — one of the fastest miles in the history of Southern Oaks. Moore was very pleased with Lawless Shadow while not being concerned that Century Farroh was bested:

The 2020 O'Brien Award winner as Canada's Somebeachsomewhere Horse of the Year, Century Farroh made his much-anticipated return to the racetrack on Friday (April 16) against a familiar face but an unfamiliar foe.
Qualifying for trainer Dr. Ian Moore at Southern Oaks Training Center, Century Farroh made his five-year-old debut in a virtual match race against O'Brien Award winning stablemate Tattoo Artist -- already a 1:52.2 winner this year. Dale Spence picked up the driving assignment behind Century Farroh, while Moore handled the lines on Tattoo Artist. Century Farroh set the fractions in the qualifier, carving out fractions of :27, :57 and 1:26.4 before sprinting home in :26.3 to trip the timer in 1:53.2. Tattoo Artist closed in :26.2 to finish a neck in arrears.
