2023 Recruiting: Cole Cabana

[Scheduling note. Hi. My kid was hospitalized last summer before I could get the 2023 recruiting profiles done, so I'm planning to finish the 2023 class before starting on the 2024s. Plan is to wrap up with Cabana and Kendrick Bell, spend a bit more time pouring over potential 2024 starter Jack Tuttle's college career, then do a class wrap that's only somewhat patting myself on the back for Semaj Morgan (who got a 4th star on Rivals so he's not eligible to be class sleeper). Figure you guys wanted this instead of basketball, which just lost Olivier Nkamhoua for the season.] -------------------- Previously: Last year’s profiles, K Adam Samaha, K James Turner (Tr), S Brandyn Hillman, CB DJ Waller, CB Cameron Calhoun, CB Jyaire Hill, HSP/LB Jason Hewlett, LB Hayden Moore, LB Semaj Bridgeman, LB Ernest Hausmann (Tr), OLB Breeon Ishmail, DE Aymeric Koumba, DE Enow Etta, DE Josaiah Stewart (Tr), DT Brooks Bahr, DT Cameron Brandt, DT Trey Pierce, OT Evan Link, OT Myles Hinton (Tr), OT LaDarius Henderson (Tr), OG Nathan Efobi, IOL Amir Herring, OC Drake Nugent (Tr), TE Deakon Tonielli, TE Zack Marshall, TE AJ Barner (Tr), WR Semaj Morgan, WR Fredrick Moore, WR Karmello English, RB Benjamin Hall   Dexter (Dexter), MI – 6'0''/180 200!   Rankings 247 4.10* 6'0/180 4*, 90, NR Ovr #21 RB, #3 MI On3 4.46* 5'11/175 4*, 93, #154 Ovr #7 RB, #3 MI Rivals 4.17* 6'0/180 4*, 5.8, #215 Ovr #5 APB, #2 MI ESPN 4.55* 5'11/180 4*, 84, #116 Ovr #6 RB, #2 MI Composites 247 0.9314, #172 Ovr, #10 RB, #2 MI On3 92.06, #202 Ovr, #14 RB, #2 MI MGo 4.28*, #221/803 Ovr, #20/61 RBs YMRMFSPA Donovan Edwards   Other Suitors: MSU, Miami (YTM), WVU, Louisville Previously on MGoBlog: Hello by Alex Drain Notes: NIL. EE. Film Senior Highlights: Hudl. FB Junkies Sr Highlights. Jr Highlights. Rising Stars. Drills. On3 Breakdown. So hi, welcome back to the 2023 preseason! In Cabana's case not a lot has changed in the intervening six months. After a senior year of 2,434 all-purpose yards (1,518 rushing, 472 receiving, 444 returning) and 36 TDs (27/6/3), a lot of people figured he'd carve out a role immediately. But between the injury, running back depth, and Semaj Morgan's emergence in the return game that didn't happen. He spent spring and most of the season injured, coming away with two carries for six yards against Bowling Green while taking a redshirt. The second carry was blown up so here's Cabana's one relevant run of 2023: So let's go back to the recruiting profile! Cabana grew up a Spartan, and their top priority as of the 2021 M-MSU game. Mike Hart jumped into the race in late 2021 and had a pledge by February [insert little brother comment]. Cabana's ranking starting to shoot up in April, and by fall he was Michigan's highest-rated recruit. Miami (YTM) offered but Cabana didn't even post it, instead taking it upon himself to recruit others to Michigan. [After THE JUMP: Donovan Edwards, downshifted.]

Hello: Bobby Kanka | mgoblog

The final 2025 Hello yet to be written is in-state DT Bobby Kanka. A Howell, Michigan, native, Kanka was the third player in the 2025 class but is now the longest tenured, as Chris Ewald recently decommitted, following Mantrez Walker (who your author forgot about on first draft). The tackle is among the best players in Michigan, so let's get to know the only current commit on the defensive side of the ball:    GURU RATINGS  RATINGS BY SITE 247: 6'4/255 On3: 6'4/263 Rivals: 6'5/260 ESPN: 6'4/270 3*, 89, NR Ovr #31 DL, #4 MI 3*, 89, NR Ovr #35 DL, #4 MI 4*, 5.8, #249 Ovr #18 SDE, #3 MI no rating 4.11 4.09 4.04 n/a COMPOSITE RANKINGS 247 Composite On3 Consensus MGoBlog   4*, 0.8933, #394 Ovr #35 DL, #5 MI 3*, 89.4, #321 Ovr #36 DL, #5 MI 4*, #348/805 Ovr #28/71 DTs since '90 3.93 3.94 4.06 Kanka was unranked when he committed in August but has since been placed on the boards of three of the four services. He lacks a ranking at ESPN (surprise, surprise) but is a 3* to On3 and 247, while a 4* to Rivals. Both the 247 Composite and the On3 consensus rankings place Kanka in the zone we typically refer to as 3.5* territory. According to Seth's database on all defensive tackles recruited since 1990, Kanka ranks 28th out of 71. The four sites variously list his weight from 255 to 270, which is an important note when we talk about what position he may play in college.  [AFTER THE JUMP: made to play at MIchigan]

Hello: Eli Owens | mgoblog

Moving on to the second of the three 2025 Hellos we need to cover, today is TE Eli Owens. The Tennessee native trended hard to Michigan after attending The Game in Ann Arbor and then gave the Wolverines his commitment in early January. Today we will get to know this TE/Fullback prospect:    GURU RATINGS  RATINGS BY SITE 247: 6'1.5/243 On3: 6'2/230 Rivals: 6'3/220 ESPN: 6'3/230 3*, 88, NR Ovr #19 TE, #11 TN 3*, 88, NR Ovr #24 TE, #11 TN 4*, 5.8, #210 Ovr #6 TE, #7 TN 3*, no ranking 3.75 3.71 4.17 n/a COMPOSITE RANKINGS 247 Composite On3 Consensus MGoBlog   4*, 0.8919, #355 Ovr #19 TE, #11 TN 3*, 88.67, #367 Ovr #23 TE, #12 TN 3.5*, #476/805 Ovr #31/53 TEs since '90 3.92 3.87 3.88 Owens is a 3* to three of the four sites, getting a relatively high ranking only to Rivals. From the height/weight listings you can see one of the primary issues holding back Owens from being ranked among the elite TE prospects, which is his very modest height. He's listed at only 6'1.5" to 247, while ESPN/Rivals are more optimistic by listing him at 6'3", but Owens is obviously an undersized TE recruit, which begs some questions about his position, which we will discuss below. Among all TEs Michigan has recruited since 1990, Owens is towards the middle, 31st out of 53 in Seth's database. A pretty routine 3.5* sort of prospect.  [AFTER THE JUMP: Max Bredeson, but a rated recruit]

Hello: Carter Smith | mgoblog

Michigan's got a few 2025 commits that have yet to receive Hellos and today we start with the most star-studded one, 4* QB Carter Smith. Lost in all the fanfare surrounding Michigan's failed pursuit of mega QB prospect Bryce Underwood is the fact that the Wolverines already picked up a commitment from a pretty highly regarded QB in Smith, who joined the '25 class in November. Today we will get to know a potential QB Of The Future.    GURU RATINGS  RATINGS BY SITE 247: 6'3/180 On3: 6'3/180 Rivals: 6'3/197 ESPN: 6'3/185 3*, 89, NR Ovr #17 QB, #39 FL 4*, 92, #112 Ovr #9 QB, #17 FL 4*, 5.9, #56 Ovr #2 DUAL, #10 FL 4*, 80, #208 Ovr #8 PRO, #30 FL 4.00 4.42 4.60 4.15 COMPOSITE RANKINGS 247 Composite On3 Consensus MGoBlog   4*, 0.9404, #148 Ovr #10 QB, #24 FL 4*, 91.73, #162 Ovr #11 QB, #24 FL 4*, #212/804 Ovr #17/43 QBs since '90 4.40 4.17 4.31 Smith is a legitimate 4* to three of the four services and is either top 100 or borderline top 100 to Rivals and On3. The Rivals ranking is rather remarkable, Smith being bumped up from unranked to top 60 nationally in one national rankings update. The negative site on Smith is 247, pegging Smith as a 3* presently, but even that ranking is damn close to being a 4*. Based on Seth's 5 star scale, it is exactly one, 4.00. The consensus rankings thus have Smith a good bit higher, with the 247 Composite bordering on 4.5* status. Based on Seth's database, Smith is 17th out of 43 QBs that Michigan has recruited since 1990 in terms of rankings. Not too bad!  [AFTER THE JUMP: do you remember JJ McCarthy?]

Hello: Jeremiah Lowe

The only 2024 commit who doesn't yet have a Hello is 3* CB Jeremiah Lowe, out of Frederick Douglass High School in Lexington, Kentucky. Lowe committed in August around the same time as Jo'Ziah Edmond, who I profiled a few weeks back. With signing day tomorrow, I figured it was time to give Lowe his proper Hello.  GURU RATINGS RATINGS BY SITE 247: 5'11/170 On3: 5'11/170 Rivals: 5'11/170 ESPN: 5'11/175 3*, 86, NR Ovr #87 CB, #13 KY 3*, 85, NR Ovr #196 CB, #15 KY 3*, 5.6, NR Ovr #NR CB, #8 KY 3*, 77, #421 SE #88 CB, #7 KY 3.42 3.13 3.48 3.48 COMPOSITE RANKINGS 247 Composite On3 Consensus MGoBlog   3*, 0.8614, #1123 Ovr #100 CB, #10 KY 3*, 85.38, #1184 Ovr #124 CB, #9 KY 2*, #744/800 Ovr #69/77 CBs since 1990 3.61 3.54 3.39 Lowe is a legitimate 3* and based on the rankings, he is one of the biggest stabs-in-the-dark of this class. He's 69th out of 77 corners Michigan has recruited since 1990 and in the 100-125 range for corners nationally. The recruiting rankings say there's nothing to be excited or intrigued about with Lowe, but given the manner in which Michigan pursued him (more on that in a minute), there is probably more than meets the eyes.  [AFTER THE JUMP: the mystery man]
