The War on Critical Race Theory

Share:
Turning a blind eye to the realities of racial injustice, the highly orchestrated right-wing attacks cast a body of scholarship about race in the law as a great threat to American society.

According to the right, a specter is haunting the United States: the specter of critical race theory (CRT).
On the eve of losing the presidency, Donald Trump issued an executive order in September banning “diversity and race sensitivity training” in government agencies, including all government “spending related to any training on critical race theory.” He was prompted, apparently, by hearing an interview with conservative activist Christopher Rufo on Fox News characterizing “critical race theory programs in government” as “the cult of indoctrination.” (President Biden ended the ban as soon as he took office.) In March Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkan ....

Conservative Parent Groups Working to Reclaim Schools from Leftists

Conservative Parent Groups Working to Reclaim Schools from Leftists
A group of American conservatives established a national grassroot organization, Parents Defending Education, to fight left-wing indoctrination in the classroom. Neily, a civil rights advocate, and Asra Nomani, a former reporter for The Wall Street Journal, were among the leader. The group’s objective is to “reclaim our schools from activists imposing harmful agendas.”
“In recent years activists have targeted public, private, and charter schools across the country with a campaign to impose toxic new curriculums and to force our kids into divisive identity groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, and gender. Many schools have already embraced this model, and many more are preparing to embrace it,” the organization posted on its website. ....

Asian-American parents mobilized to oppose the de Blasio administration’s specialized high school proposal. Now they’re fighting a larger battle.

New York
On February 26, when former New York City schools chancellor Richard Carranza announced his resignation, the Asian-American parent groups who had been calling for his ouster for more than 18 months were wary celebrants. Carranza’s departure was a measure of vindication for these parents, who want the city to retain its current selective admissions systems for gifted children and for teenagers seeking entry into top public high schools. Carranza was determined to reduce what he called segregation in city schools and to create more opportunities for black and Hispanic students an effort, the parents understood, that would come at the expense of Asian-American students who worked hard to do well under the current system. Even before the surge in attac ....

Chinese Americans mobilize against critical race theory

Christopher Paslay discusses how race is taught in schools on ‘Fox & Friends.’
A Chinese American group on Tuesday issued a public letter forcefully denouncing critical race theory (CRT) as a hateful, divisive and manipulative fraud that has infected nearly every facet of society and must be stopped.
The Chinese American Citizens Alliance Greater New York (CACAGNY) said CRT has predominantly entered workplaces and educational institutions under the guise of anti-racism and diversity, equity and inclusion when it is in fact racist, repressive, discriminatory and divisive.

Efforts to change selective admissions policies fuel parent activism

Lee Cheng graduated from San Francisco’s Lowell High School in 1985. He counts himself one of the lucky ones. Lowell High, which was the only local public school specifically for high-performing students, had a strict racial-quota admissions policy when he applied. No racial or ethnic group could comprise more than 40 percent of the school’s student body. The rule was aimed at desegregating the district, but even as a teenager, Cheng found it unfair. It meant that Asian students had to score higher on the entrance exam than white students, who in turn had to score higher on the exam than Black and Hispanic applicants. Cheng’s friend his orchestra partner was not admitted, though if he had been of a different race he might have earned a seat. The boy’s parents were poor immigrants his father a waiter and his mother a seamstress. “He would have gotten in, but for ....
