Review: The Medicine (Re-issue) - John Mark McMillan

Reviewed by Peter Timmis
McMillan is, of course, best known as composer of the 2005 oft covered classic "How He Loves" - surely one of the greatest worship songs of all time and included here as a bonus track. 'The Medicine' was originally released independently by the North Carolina native in 2008 and last year received a welcome record label re-release with four additional tracks. The album's Americana vibe may come as a surprise to those who only know of JMM through his worship hit but sceptics will soon be won over by the big choruses, gritty vocals and gripping lyrics on offer here. The title track in particular is a riotous slice of Springsteen-esque rock chock-full of tasty guitar licks. Other highlights include the dreamy "Carbon Ribs"; the tender and melodic "Death In His Grave" and "Dress Me Up" with its powerful repeated refrain of the line "His love is stronger (than the power of death)". If you're yet to catch onto this versatile songwriting talent then 'The Medicine' is a great place to start.

Review: Heaven On Earth Part 1 - Planetshakers - Digital Only

Reviewed by Tim Holden
Recorded at the Planetshakers regional conferences in the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore, this four-track EP was produced and mixed by Joth Hunt, who also leads the worship along with Sam Evans, BJ Pridham and Chelsi Nikkerud. "There Is No One Like You" opens with a high energy EDM feel before moving to the softer, synth-led dance beats of "The Greatest". "Above All Names" is a slow building rock ballad that moves into more spontaneous worship and the EP closes with the more reflective piano-led "Not Alone" building to a powerful climax. Style-wise this is standard Planetshakers fare, layered unison vocals, pumping bass dance beats or rock power ballad with simple, easy to grasp lyrics that focus on Jesus rather than our response all wrapped up in great arrangements and production. It is very easy to listen to and even easier to get caught up in worship.

Review: Forever - Fresh Fire | Cross Rhythms

Reviewed by Brendan O'Regan
This is a pleasantly unusual EP from a South Jersey-based rock band. The female vocals (by Tiandra Jones) are light and self-assured, but by contrast underpinned by a progressive rock sound - driven largely by the insistent bass playing of Ahmad Sanon and Alan Wilkins, especially on the opening track "I Am Free", a declaration of confident faith. This is followed by a short instrumental, progressive rock style, but no self-respecting prog rock band would stand over a track one minute 17seconds long - even the solos would last longer! (Admittedly they make up for this somewhat as they play out the final track.) "It Will Be Alright" is a lighter piece with an emphasis on joy and a welcome reassurance about a "brighter day", and there's no doubt about the source of the optimism - "after redemption there's forgiveness." In case listeners were concerned it would get too happy-clappy the next song, "Stand", tells the story of someone with their "back against the wall" and losing the will to fight, with emphatic percussion heightening the sense of personal crisis. But again, the source of help is clear - "I'm falling Lord so please give me your hand." Song writing credits are shared across band members and producer John Smythe manages a fine balance between the light vocals and heavy instrumentals while technical quality is excellent throughout.

Review: Phoenix - Nathan Jess | Cross Rhythms

Reviewed by Ian Whitwood
Northern Ireland-based songwriter and worship leader Nathan's third album demonstrates his heart for genuine worship. "Awake My Soul" with its rhythmic percussion and rock guitars is powerful stuff while Nashville's Chris McClarney accompanies Nathan on "Tear The Veil" which is beautifully sung and references the Lord's Prayer. "Hearts Of The Fathers", co-written with Matt Redman for single release, is a prayer with a Celtic feel with the strings of Everett and Caroline Hardin enhancing the tone as Nathan sings, "You came to restore/You came to renew us." An adaptation of "Amazing Grace (I Will Trust)" to the tune of 'Danny Boy' works well, with the additional lyrics sandwiched between familiar verses. Nathan reflects on the implications of Christ's sacrifice for us on the final track, "Sweet Communion" summing up his own deep relationship with his Saviour.

Review: Glory Song - Matt Redman | Cross Rhythms

Reviewed by Lins Honeyman
The latest album by revered worship artist Matt Redman sees the Watford-born songsmith bring in a number of guest artists to help communicate his love for God with cameos from the likes of Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Kierra Sheard, Kim Walker-Smith and even a 120-strong choir peppering proceedings. Whilst these appearances (including a rapped section courtesy of Guvna B on the strangely non-gospel sounding "Gospel Song") help add some variety, this is default Redman fare with mostly mid-tempo songs charting the personal side of having a relationship with God - delivered in trademark half whispered/half sung fashion - dominating the release. A gospel choir adorns the opener "All Glory" and things get things off to a relatively stirring start before the likes of "Greatest Hallelujah" and "Redemption Ground" sees Redman back in more familiar territory. All this makes for a somewhat pedestrian affair and, whilst a new Matt Redman album is always to be welcomed and there's some useful content about hope, trust and dealing with pain for the believer to draw inspiration from, there's little melodically or thematically that we've not heard before. Perhaps going for a more stylistically varied approach as briefly evidenced in the delightfully '80s-tinged "Still I Will Sing" or a more prominent use of the choir other than just congregational singing would have helped make this release stand out more.
