Detta O'Cathain obituary: Irish woman who became Tory grand dame

Died: April 23rd, 2021
Detta O’Cathain, who died in Sussex on April 23rd after a short illness, aged 83, was the most successful Irish woman there had ever been in the business and political life of Britain, ending up as a leading Conservative in the House of Lords.
It was a far cry from her Irish background whose nationalism was signalled by the use of the Gaelic form of the surname Kane. Her paternal grandfather, a customs officer, was an early member of the Gaelic League in Ulster. He was forced by intimidation to move south from Belfast. Her father was based in Cork as a tax inspector when Margaret, known as Detta, the eldest of three children, was born on February 2nd, 1938.

Baroness O'Cathain, who has died aged 83, was a forthright businesswoman who endured a torrid time as managing director of the Barbican arts and conference centre from January 1990 to March 1995.
When in the early 1960s the City of London made a “gift to the nation” of the £150 million arts complex, it was assumed that the Barbican would pay for itself, with the rent from exhibitions and conferences covering the costs of the concert hall, cinema, two theatres and art gallery. By 1990, however, the centre was costing the Corporation £21.4 million a year – 27 per cent of its income from rates.

As street protests came back last year pointing out pressing issues needing change in the country, the LGBT community joined the movement calling for more progress on gender equality too. And although 2021 is not a year to expect any leaps of progress, activism for the cause will continue.
In the wake of a day celebrating love, The Bangkok Post looks at how far the legal and social movement on gender issues has come, and how far it still has to go before LGBT relationships have the same status as heterosexual ones in Thailand.

The Civil Partnership Bill is facing a delay as government whips once again questioned its necessity and requested another round of focus group interviews.
Chompoonute Nakornthap, policy adviser to the Social Development and Human Security Ministry, revealed her team was asked to review the bill.
In July last year, the cabinet said it would pass the bill to government whips for further consideration. However, the whips recently asked the bill's sponsors to review its content, questioning its necessity and the sponsors' actual intentions, while also addressing religious sensitivity.

The number of female CEOS in Fortune 500 companies hit a record high
There is still some way to go before we achieve anything resembling equality at the highest echelons of business but there were some signs in 2020 that we are on the right path. The number of female CEOs in Fortune 500 companies reached 41 this year. Katharine Graham was the first woman to make the list in 1972 when she became CEO of The Washington Post. Since then, she has paved the path for many more including Best Buy's Corie Barry, Upwork's Hayden Brown and CVS Health Corp's Karen Lynch.
