Teachers backing the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum say it will help close sometimes woeful gaps in young people's knowledge of this country's past.

A reported gas leak has led to the evacuation of a number of buildings in the Auckland CBD.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said the incident was at the intersection of Chancery Street and Bacons Lane.
Firefighters are assisting Vector to assess and monitor the situation.
Seven fire trucks are in attendance.

But the government is defending the numbers, saying some funds are still under negotiation, and the police are still better off than they were under National.

A person was killed when a car crashed into a tree in Mid Canterbury early this morning.
Emergency services were called to the crash east of Methven at 6.15am.
The driver was the only person in the car and died at the scene, police said.

The price of units in the Fonterra Shareholders' Fund, which are based on economic returns from Fonterra shares, have plunged as much as 13 percent before trimming their losses to settle about 7 percent lower.
Fonterra's own shares traded on its internal market also fell more than 13 percent.
The preferred option of the co-operative's board is to make it cheaper and easier for farmers to join, but it has also proposed capping or scrapping the Shareholders' Fund.
The head of research at investment house Jarden Securities, Arie Dekker, said Fonterra shareholders needed to think closely about scrapping the fund, which was the only avenue for non-farmer investors to have an exposure to Fonterra's business.
