2023 Recruiting: Cole Cabana

[Scheduling note. Hi. My kid was hospitalized last summer before I could get the 2023 recruiting profiles done, so I'm planning to finish the 2023 class before starting on the 2024s. Plan is to wrap up with Cabana and Kendrick Bell, spend a bit more time pouring over potential 2024 starter Jack Tuttle's college career, then do a class wrap that's only somewhat patting myself on the back for Semaj Morgan (who got a 4th star on Rivals so he's not eligible to be class sleeper). Figure you guys wanted this instead of basketball, which just lost Olivier Nkamhoua for the season.] -------------------- Previously: Last year’s profiles, K Adam Samaha, K James Turner (Tr), S Brandyn Hillman, CB DJ Waller, CB Cameron Calhoun, CB Jyaire Hill, HSP/LB Jason Hewlett, LB Hayden Moore, LB Semaj Bridgeman, LB Ernest Hausmann (Tr), OLB Breeon Ishmail, DE Aymeric Koumba, DE Enow Etta, DE Josaiah Stewart (Tr), DT Brooks Bahr, DT Cameron Brandt, DT Trey Pierce, OT Evan Link, OT Myles Hinton (Tr), OT LaDarius Henderson (Tr), OG Nathan Efobi, IOL Amir Herring, OC Drake Nugent (Tr), TE Deakon Tonielli, TE Zack Marshall, TE AJ Barner (Tr), WR Semaj Morgan, WR Fredrick Moore, WR Karmello English, RB Benjamin Hall   Dexter (Dexter), MI – 6'0''/180 200!   Rankings 247 4.10* 6'0/180 4*, 90, NR Ovr #21 RB, #3 MI On3 4.46* 5'11/175 4*, 93, #154 Ovr #7 RB, #3 MI Rivals 4.17* 6'0/180 4*, 5.8, #215 Ovr #5 APB, #2 MI ESPN 4.55* 5'11/180 4*, 84, #116 Ovr #6 RB, #2 MI Composites 247 0.9314, #172 Ovr, #10 RB, #2 MI On3 92.06, #202 Ovr, #14 RB, #2 MI MGo 4.28*, #221/803 Ovr, #20/61 RBs YMRMFSPA Donovan Edwards   Other Suitors: MSU, Miami (YTM), WVU, Louisville Previously on MGoBlog: Hello by Alex Drain Notes: NIL. In Cabana's case not a lot has changed in the intervening six months. After a senior year of 2,434 all-purpose yards (1,518 rushing, 472 receiving, 444 returning) and 36 TDs (27/6/3), a lot of people figured he'd carve out a role immediately. But between the injury, running back depth, and Semaj Morgan's emergence in the return game that didn't happen. He spent spring and most of the season injured, coming away with two carries for six yards against Bowling Green while taking a redshirt. The second carry was blown up so here's Cabana's one relevant run of 2023: So let's go back to the recruiting profile! Cabana grew up a Spartan, and their top priority as of the 2021 M-MSU game. Mike Hart jumped into the race in late 2021 and had a pledge by February [insert little brother comment]. Cabana's ranking starting to shoot up in April, and by fall he was Michigan's highest-rated recruit. Miami (YTM) offered but Cabana didn't even post it, instead taking it upon himself to recruit others to Michigan. [After THE JUMP: Donovan Edwards, downshifted.]

Benjamin Hall Fr. CJ Stokes So. Benjamin Hall Fr. Alex Orji Fr.* Cole Cabana Fr. RATING: 5 There is no greater "Everything's coming up Milhous!" moment in recent Michigan football history than Blake Corum busting his knee the week before the Ohio State game, still beating Ohio State as a one-handed Donovan Edwards becomes a national star, and then getting Blake Goddamn Corum back for his senior season largely because he didn't win the Heisman on account of the knee. Remember the days when Michigan couldn't find a running back capable of running through a dizzy toddler? Now we are entering the third straight season where the #2 guy would start on all but ~5 football teams in the country. In fact, if you take Dane Brugler's word for it the number of teams not named "Michigan" on which Donovan Edwards would not start is one: Wisconsin. His NFL draft rankings have Corum 1, Braelon Allen 2, and Edwards 3. Maybe there's a sophomore out there on Alabama or something, but: nah. This is the best backfield in America, and it's not real close. What say you now, Mike Hart haters? Probably "bur bur bur bur duhhhhh." Get wrecked. Like opposition run defenses. IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED Last year's preview was rapturous about BLAKE CORUM. Perhaps never in the history of his preview series has a player been so thoroughly hyped: ATTENTION MEDIA: did you know that Fred Jackson rejoined the Michigan football program this offseason? He's an analyst or somesuch. He's in the building. He is there for you, the quote-gathering media, to sidle up next to. Once you've sidled real good you can say "hey" or "psst," preferably in a large group. And then you can do this. Anyway. BLAKE CORUM is the light and the truth. … Corum should push for All-American honors but probably end up behind at least a couple of the Henderson/Robinson/Vaughn trio when it comes to big honors. This take was, somehow, pessimistic. [AFTER THE JUMP: mea culpa]

Film: Senior Highlights: Junior Highlights. Hudl. Underclass Combine. Pylon. Receiver week continues with the one currently highest on the depth chart. To understand how Cardinal Ritter Prep went 14-0 last year, one doesn't have to look much further than the senior highlights of Fredrick Moore above. The ball would get into Moore's hands, yada yada yada, 1500 yards and 28 touchdowns. Though Moore has average height for a Power 5 receiver, he stops and starts like a jitterbug. So many of his highlights are simple wide receiver screens where he's slipping by kids trapped in trapped in slow-motion. Since that was all happening in Missouri Class 3, nobody in the recruiting industry was quite sure how to take it. Some scouts were pointing to his track times to justify worries about his speed. Some talked about all the screens and broken tackles in his highlight reels. Others were excited about his contested catch abilities. Or his routes. Quite a few saw the words "Class 3 WR from Missouri that Michigan likes" and decided that's a Ronnie Bell. Everyone saw the sub-180 weight and recruiting rankings, and figured Fredrick's name would behind Derrick's, Rod's, Sherrone's, Joe's and maybe even Hayden's in usage frequency before the word Moore. Then came spring ball, when Fredrick Moore was generating more hype than all but one of the early enrollees, and a spring game in which he started to undermine our Jyaire Hill excitement as well. What we haven't seen is whether the Michigan Effect works when they grab another Big Ten team's fourth-year player. Since the world's largest tight end factor lost Luke Schoonmaker, Erick All, Joel Hongiford, Carter Selzer, and Louis Hansen all in the same offseason, they were open to a portal addition, and AJ Barner was open to getting the hell out of Walt Bell Hell in Bloomington. Walt Bell means an offense predicated on spreading the tight ends to maximum WR width and using them as quasi offensive linemen in a secondary or tertiary point of attack. This means we got a lot of tape of Barner trying to block defensive backs in space, and very little tight end work from the 2022 tape. For that we have to go back to 2021, or Michigan's spring game. For this year's class they had Andrew Rapplyea until Penn State pried him out of the class. When Michigan took Deakon Tonielli the story was they were going to just have one in the class. Then Zachary Marshall came to the BBQ and ran around some. People wondering how a receiving target of a 5-star QB for SoCal power-program Carlsbad could be a considered a "hidden gem" don't know the full story. Marshall was playing receiver for small Santa Fe Christian Academy, producing 1012 yards and 9 TDs on 44 catches as a junior, also playing defense. Matt Weiss got a tipoff and traveled over there to see him, invited Marshall to the BBQ, and Michigan saw something (via Steve Lorenz): I'm told Marshall 'absolutely blew (Michigan) away' during a one-on-one workout with the staff before the actual BBQ on Sunday afternoon. His visit was one the Wolverines were looking forward to and now I expect them to go all in for Marshall going forward. Suddenly two TEs in the class was on again. Marshall committed soon thereafter. Transfer rules forced him to sit out his first four games at Carlsbad, and by January he was enrolled (and sick in bed) at Michigan. [After THE JUMP: Not the same article from Wednesday, I swear]

The best Pixar film since their acquisition is debatable, but Coco makes enough of the lists that I think it can serve for some consensus. It is a brilliant film, gorgeous, deep, and almost perfect except for one unfortunate uncanny valley (Spoiler Alert). See, for much of the movie this kid who's traversing the Land of Dead is doing so wearing skeleton facial paint to disguise the fact that he, unlike all the rest of this realm, still has his muscles and flesh. And you're thinking: Did none of these (ex-) people watch sports? Sport fan brains are wired to tell how much meat a player carries on his bones if nothing else. Swap Steve Breaston's jersey for Jason Avant's, and you'd still have to get 100 rows back to fool anybody. The latest moment like this was in Michigan's spring game. Nobody had seen Amorion Walker, the early enrolled wide receiver from the sandal gap of Louisiana, and nobody seemed to have accurate rosters of who was on maize or blue, but nobody who follows Michigan recruiting had trouble identifying #4. They would have known, for example, that ever since this Southerner whose catching radius has its own zip code had the best 40 time (4.41) and vertical (40 inches) at Bama's June 2021 camp, Michigan had worked extremely hard to pry Walker out of Notre Dame's class, and that Notre Dame everything short of abandoning their most hallowed tradition (losing to a mid-major school) to prevent it. They also might have known that Special Agent Ron Bellamy played for Walker's coach, that Sam Webb was alerted by the staff that they saw this as a 5-star recruitment, and he should get be on hand for the announcement on (early) Signing Day (Sam's second visit to see Walker). That everyone who saw Walker play apparently agreed with the two winningest schools with the nation's best scouting staffs, but couldn't bring themselves to rate the guy higher than 3 stars because he looks like a twig. Then the twig teleported past Will Johnson and settled in the soft spot in Cover 2. Okay, we see it. Now feed the boy. [After THE JUMP: Can we pay out NIL in meat?]
