With Climate Justice Week, Anna Del Castillo, MDiv '21, Brings Hope Into Grief

“I remember after a busy day of DivEx programming, I sat on the steps of Swartz Hall, feeling the sun on skin and just hearing this whisper from the Divine saying, ‘You belong here; here is a place that you will grow and get to know me better.’ And so I was just like, ‘Okay. I’m applying to Harvard Divinity School. This will be a place that will further my aspirations to do healing justice work.'” As the daughter of a United Methodist preacher and Peruvian-Bolivian immigrant, Anna Del Castillo, MDiv ’21, grew up in a cultural fusion in Mississippi. Her spiritually rich upbringing, she says, set her trajectory toward continued change and activism.

Over the past year, our world has been overwhelmed by the Covid-19 pandemic which caused our lives to grind to a halt and our perceptions of ‘normal’ to become a distant memory. Though they were given far too little attention, issues of social inequity and broad ranging impacts of a changing climate continued to forcefully affect the lives of people around the world. As vaccinations and the onset of spring allow us to feel a sense of hope again, I believe we have a responsibility to illuminate and address issues of social equity and climate change once again.

Earth Day: a time for environmental justice

Thursday, April 22 marks the 51st Annual Earth Day or El día de la Tierra. This year, I am celebrating the renewed sense of urgency around environmental justice I see from community members, elected officials and organizations. Continued calls for justice and equity could not be more important as we face the greatest challenge of our generation, a rapidly warming planet and its effects on every aspect of our lives.
During this devastating pandemic and an exhausting year, I have found peace and comfort by being in touch with my gente – the amazing local and national Latinx leaders whom together we are building our collective power and elevating calls to action. Each day, I work with these leaders to plant seeds of hope in our community that will yield a better, more just society. A society that guarantees all people – regardless of skin color, ethnicity, language, country of origin, economic and political power – have clean air and water, easy access to nature, and a stable climate.
