Grayville City Council will hold the first of its two monthly meetings on Monday, July 11th at 7 PM at City Hall. An Executive Session will discuss action with the employees of the Police Department, collective negotiation matters between the public body and its employees, specifically regarding salary schedules, and the setting of a price for sale or lease of property owned by the public body. In old business is the water filtration plant, the park boat ramp lease, Len Thompson and the permitting of chickens and ducks on his property, NOVACOM and other quotes for the security camera system, parking stripes, crosswalks, and no parking areas, the ISP Health and Welfare Fund, and the approval of project costs and expenditures for the Natural Gas Distribution Infrastructure Safety and Modernization Grant. New business concerns the approve change order and final pay estimate for Wiggs Excavating, Leasing the Street Sweeper, the Brush Dump Lease Agreement, and a Zoning Variance Request. Also on tap is the Consent Agenda, Treasurer's Report, Purchase Order Approvals, and recognition of visitors; plus, reports from the Police Chief/Utility Manager, City Attorney, Commissioners, and the Mayor. Grayville meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month With fifteen (15) county or junior fairs held last month in June, there are fifty-eight (58) fairs scheduled for this month throughout Illinois. That list includes several in our downstate region, two of which start this weekend and continue through all of next week. While the Fayette County Fair in Brownstown begins tomorrow and runs through next Wednesday, the Wayne County Fair in Fairfield gets underway this Saturday and rolls through next Saturday, the 16th. There are twenty-two (22) county fairs in August, with five (5) in September. While the Illinois State Fair in Springfield runs August 11th thru the 21st, the Du Quoin State Fair is August 26th thru September 5th down in Perry County. Clay County 4-H Advisor Erin Maxwell has released the 4-H schedule for the Clay County Fair. In 4-H, members learn about topics that interest them. Most of these projects will be exhibited at the General Project show and displayed in the REA Building. 4-H youth who raise beef, swine, sheep, goats, dairy, and poultry for their annual projects can showcase them at the livestock shows. Events open Thursday night July 21st with the 4-H Food & Clothing Show at 5:30 pm. Friday, July 22nd from 4 – 7 pm is the 4-H BBQ. The General Projects Show will be at 9am on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon at 2 pm will be the Poultry Show followed by the Rabbit Show. Monday morning at 8 am will be the Beef Show with the Sheep Show at 2 pm. On Tuesday the Swine Show is at 8 am with the Goat Show at 2 pm. Wednesday starts with the 4-H Tractor & Lawnmower Driving contest at 1pm, followed by the 4-H Auction at 6:30 pm. Fair week will close out on Thursday for 4-H members with 3 shows. The Dog show will be at 10 am, the Cat show is at noon, and the horse show at 6 pm. 4-H members will have the opportunity to advance and display their projects at the Illinois State Fair on August 14 in Springfield. All 4-H shows are open to the public and free to attend, so the community is encouraged to come out and support 4-H. Johnsonville Community Days sponsored by the Johnsonville Ruritan Club will be held August 5th – 7th. On Friday, August 5th will feature the Truck and Tractor pull and Bingo. Saturday's events will include the 5K, the truck, car, motorcycle, and tractor show, a mud bog, and Farm Follies. Entry fee for the truck, car, motorcycle, and tractor show is $10 and you can enter by calling Lawrence Pennington at 618-673-2138, Samantha Robertson at 618-919-0083 or Rick Matthews at 618-835-2681. The event wraps up on Sunday, August 7th with the Community Church service, presented by the Cisne FFA. A 23-year-old Centralia man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison when pleading guilty to one of two Class X predatory criminal sexual assault to a victim under 13 charges pending against him. Adam Prusz entered the plea in Jefferson County Court. As part of the plea, the second count was dropped. Mt. Vernon Police say the investigation began at the end of December when an 11-year-old girl came forward about the alleged sexual acts that had reportedly occurred multiple times between April 2020 and September 2021. Prusz had moved to Centralia by the time police received an arrest warrant and he was arrested on the outstanding warrant by Centralia Police on March 28th. He had remained in custody at the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bond since his arrest. River stages as of this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 11.68 feet Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 5.34 feet. The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 14.85 feet. Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 5.31 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 5.65 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 4.82 feet.
