It was kind of scary. The suspect lost control of that vehicle in the 3500 block of lowell where officers stopped it. At that location shots were exchanged between the suspect and two officers. The suspect was hit and was pronounced at the scene. Reporter Denver Police tell us that four officers opened fire in this entire incident. As usual, in cases like this they are not saying who shot first in any of those scenarios. Theres a lot more investigating to do and you can imagine with a crime scene as large as this one, its going to take quite a while. Thanks a lot, steve. The injured officer is treated at Denver Health medical center. She was shot in her lower left leg and is listed in fair condition this afternoon. Police chief robert white says this is a difficult time for his department and that his officers are doing what they can to be supportive of one another. The suspect drove here to 35th and lowell where neighbors said they heard the sound of a racing car and a loud crash where Denver Police officer says exchanged gunfire and killed the suspect. Notify authorities. When a deputy went to the house to check on the victim, she wasnt tied up at the time but was able to give the deputy signs that she needed help. The way she was acting, interacting with mr. Wilkerson, something was not right. So he did further investigation, found that she had a warrant for 50, at which time he made the decision to take her into custody. Fifty dollars warrants are something we typically dont bring people in on, but he felt that something was wrong and he needed to get her away from mr. Wilkerson to find out what was going on. Reporter the Sheriffs Department says that the victim is getting care here in mesa county. The suspect, mr. Wilkerson, is held on a 1 million bond. Hes had several runins with the law here in colorado and as we mentioned earlier in this story, 30 years ago he was on death row in texas released on a miranda rights technicality and ended up in colorado.
