Alaska Senator Mum on Haaland Vote, Has Financial Conflict of Interest

As the Senate moves towards a vote on confirming Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) as the secretary of the Department of the Interior next week, a question mark remains around how Alaska Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan will vote. The rest of the Alaska delegation—GOP Rep. Don Young and GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski—have said they will support Haaland's confirmation, but Sullivan has stayed mum. Haaland would be the first ever Native American Cabinet secretary.
Alaska is more impacted by Interior Department policy than any other state because more than 60% of its land is federally owned. President Biden temporarily paused new fossil fuel extraction leases on federal land through an executive order in January (but did not reverse a surge of leases provided by the previous administration), and Haaland has said she intends to pursue an expansion of renewable energy projects on public lands if confirmed to the position.

Senate Advances Interior Secretary Nominee Deb Haaland

Senate Advances Interior Secretary Nominee Deb Haaland
President Joe Biden's historic nominee picked up more Republican support ahead of her final confirmation vote.
The Senate voted Thursday to move forward with confirming Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) to lead the Interior Department, bringing President Joe Biden’s nominee one step closer to becoming the nation’s first Native American cabinet secretary in U.S. history.
Thursday’s action, called a cloture vote, was only a procedural step. But it accomplished two things: It teed up Haaland for a final confirmation vote on Monday, and it put Republican senators on record for the first time as to how they’ll likely vote in the end. The way senators vote on cloture almost always mirrors their final votes on a nominee.

Dan Sullivan Mum On Deb Haaland As Alaska GOP Colleagues Support Her
Lisa Murkowski and Don Young back Biden's historic interior secretary nominee. So do tribes in their state. Where's the Republican senator?
Interior secretary nominee Deb Haaland is on track to be confirmed on Monday. Every Democratic senator is expected to vote for her confirmation. Two Republicanshave said they’ll back her historic nomination, too. The only question now is how many other GOP senators will vote to confirm the first Native American Cabinet secretary in U.S. history.
Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) may be in the most uncomfortable position of them all.

Senate Committee Advances Haaland For Interior Secretary, Daines Votes Against

Montana Sen. Steve Daines followed through on his promise to vote against Rep. Deb Haaland’s nomination as Secretary of the Interior today but the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources advanced her nomination despite GOP opposition.
In an 11 to 9 vote, the committee voted to favorably report Congresswoman Haaland’s nomination as Secretary of the Interior.
Republican Senator of Alaska Lisa Murkowski, considered by many to be a key committee vote, said she “struggled” to decide how to vote but voted to support Rep. Haaland as the first Native American to hold the position overseeing many federal programs that directly impact Native Americans.

With crucial support from bipartisan Sens. Joe Manchin and Lisa Murkowski, Rep. Deb Haaland is very likely to become the next Interior secretary. This ultimately would make her the first Native American to lead a Cabinet agency in history.
But the question on many minds is when she could officially be confirmed by the U.S. Senate in order to take office.
