It was a long journey for author
Leigh Bardugo from releasing her original novel "Shadow and Bone" in 2012, optioned by Dreamworks the same year before Netflix finally adapted the works to television. The current series combines elements from her original novel and "Six of Crows" in the first season, focusing on Alina Starkov (
Jessie Mei Li), and follows a chosen one narrative as she's revealed to be a saintly sun summoner who can potentially heal a divided nation in the world. Bardugo spoke to Collider about how her franchise was left in limbo in Dreamworks before landing at Netflix and how the characters from both novels shape the Grishaverse in the first season of

Reading the Shadow and Bone books? Don't start with the first one

If you binge-watched Netflix’s
Shadow and Bone this weekend and you’ve never read the Leigh Bardugo books it was based on, you might be thinking about trying the main trilogy the show adapts.
Here’s some unsolicited advice: Don’t start with the first novel,
Shadow and Bone.
But wait, you might ask yourself, is that not the book that the show is based on? Isn’t it the first book of the series? The one that sets the stage for everything else? The one that introduces the Grisha, Sun Summoner Alina Starkov, and the swath of sentient darkness that tears Ravka in half?

Shadow and Bone: How the Series Differs From the Books

Shadow and Bone: How the Series Differs From the Books
The newest fantasy phenomenon has now arrived on Netflix, in the form of
Shadow and Bone, the massive YA series based on Leigh Bardugo's best-selling novels. Netflix released the first season of
Shadow and Bone on Friday morning, and it's already making waves with audiences around the world. Fans of the book series are especially excited, as showrunner Eric Heisserer and his creative team brought the world of the Grishaverse to life in way that is both faithful to the novels and brand new for TV.
Shadow and Bone isn't a major departure from the books it's based on, nor does it follow them to the letter. It's a hybrid that actually bends the narratives of multiple series' from the Grishaverse together for a singular narrative. If you're new to the

Shadow and Bone review | No mourners, no funerals in Netflix series

3.0 out of 5 star rating
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a fairly high-budget genre show in possession of any fantasy elements
must be referred to at least once as the “next Game of Thrones” – and so it’s been for Netflix’s long-awaited adaptation of Shadow and Bone, the first in a series of “Grishaverse” novels by American author Leigh Bardugo.

As is often the case the Westeros comparison isn’t particularly apt in this series, which follows a rather more traditional hero’s journey albeit in an intriguing setting (a sort of alternate “Tsarpunk” Russia and Asia) and with a compelling magic system that’s well brought to life onscreen.

"Shadow and Bone" Delivers on Diversifying Leigh Bardugo's Fantasy World

“The more I travel, the more I learn that where you are doesn’t matter nearly as much as who you’re with,” says sharpshooter Jesper Fahey (Kit Young), one of the major characters in Netflix’s
Shadow and Bone, as he  flirts with a teen stablehand at the Little Palace. The show, adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse series of young-adult fantasy novels, takes place primarily in parts of Ravka and Ketterdam. Jesper is from Novyi Zem, a fictional world modeled after Australia and the United States; Jesper is both Indigenous/aboriginal and proudly queer, making time for a hook-up with the stablehand in the middle of a planned heist. The series’ characters are pulled from both the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology, and its first season course-corrects a shortcoming of the trilogy that Bardugo acknowledged in a 2016 interview: “My first book,
