The entrance to ONCE, which is now closed.
Before the pandemic, ONCE in Somerville was known for its wild rock shows. One of its final concerts even saw the lead singer of a band then-called PowerSlut “jump off the stage and crowd surf into a rainbow unicorn inflatable kiddie pool,” says JJ Gonson, the venue’s owner.
Gonson loved to host events like this at her venue every week; however as a result of the pandemic, ONCE was forced to permanently close its doors. Having lost the lease for her space, Gonson doesn’t know when she’ll be able to get back to hosting bands like PowerSlut again, if ever.

“Some places have been absolutely decimated,” said Catherine Peterson, executive director of ArtsBoston, an audience-building and ticketing organization.
In the Before Times, the Bureau of Economic Analysis found that arts and culture contributed more than $800 billion to the US economy annually and employed 5 million people. Boston boasted more arts and cultural organizations per capita than even New York City, according to a 2016 report by the Boston Foundation.

LITTLE ROCK, AR
.- Trustees and leadership of the Arkansas Arts Center today announced that this historic institution in the capital of Little Rock, currently in the midst of a $142 million transformation, will now be known as the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA), reaffirming its leading role in cultural life throughout the state. Redesigned as a thoroughly new experience by the MacArthur Foundation “genius award” winners Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang Architects and Kate Orff of SCAPE Landscape Architecture with an increase in space of almost 50 percent and the addition of 10 acres of new grounds, the reinvented Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts is scheduled to open in spring 2022.
