COIL courses bring world to students, faculty

The growing success of COIL exemplifies how the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs advances Globalize, the seventh initiative in the University’s strategic plan, by bolstering the initiative’s second objective, the Global Guarantee, which promises that a global education is available to all Carolina students.

After virtual collaboration, Tar Heels travel to Budapest to present alongside international peers

This spring, Carolina students participated in a new hybrid course model as part of BUSI 201, “Business in Europe,” in which they engaged first virtually and then in-person, traveling to Hungary to co-present projects with students from Corvinus University in Budapest.

Woke Math Doesn't Add Up

Woke Math Doesn’t Add Up
Commentary
Bridge 9340 opened in 1967 and was the U.S. state of Minnesota’s third-busiest bridge, carrying 140,000 vehicles daily.
Forty years later, the bridge collapsed during the evening rush hour without warning. Thirteen people died. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board determined that the collapse was the result of a math error made by the engineers who designed the bridge.
When it comes to designing bridges, there is little room for error. Every calculation must be correct. Make one mistake and the whole thing might fail, as happened with Bridge 9340.
Sadly, math is under assault by progressive educators who care more about being “woke” than being accurate. Earlier this year, the Oregon Department of Education sent an email to its teachers encouraging them to enrol in a virtual micro-course titled “A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction.”

Spotlight on … Parlor Performances

Spotlight on … Parlor Performances
Are you longing for the invigorating feeling you get from a live musical performance?
With the shut down of most indoor performance spaces due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the opportunity to connect with live music has shifted to online platforms like YouTube and Facebook.
For now, we must be satisfied with the virtual world of performing. This month, Newton Cultural Development is pleased to announce the The Parlor Performance series as an alternative way to reconnect with live music. Our hope is to support local musicians by offering them a venue to perform in and a live audience to interact with. The series, to be live streamed on Facebook, provides a sampling of multiple musical genres, showcasing local talent. Tune in on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. on the Newton Cultural Development Facebook page, https://bit.ly/3nRmToe.
