Norwich president moves into a dorm room. Media spotlight ensues.

March 08, 2021
New York Times, Anderson Cooper’s ‘Full Circle’ show highlight how Norwich coped with COVID-19 in-room quarantine
Have you heard the story about the Norwich University leader who moved into a student dorm in a COVID-19 pandemic show of solidarity? Sure you have. And now, thanks to a pair of national media appearances last week, America has, too.
President Mark C. Anarumo’s move into Wilson Hall, a Corps of Cadets barracks, on Jan. 29 began as an internal story, shared by the president himself in brief update videos.
The story then spread statewide. Dana Casullo and Burlington, Vermont, television station WVNY-TV/WFFF-TV, Channel 22/44, were first to report it off campus, with a story Feb. 3. The Associated Press followed with a story Feb. 4; Burlington, Vermont’s WPTZ-TV, Channel 5, followed with a report Feb. 5.

A college president worried of the risks of dorm isolation. So he moved in.

March 5, 2021
NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Derek Furtado, a sophomore at Norwich University, had just stepped out of the shower in his dormitory and was shaving, a towel wrapped around his waist, when he looked to his left and saw the figure of a man in military uniform.
“That was when my heart sunk,” recalled Furtado, a cadet who plans to commission into the Coast Guard. He pulled himself together, stood at attention and said, “Good morning, sir!” The circumstances were not ideal. “He has two stars on his chest,” Furtado said. “I’m in a towel.”
But he would have to get used to it, because it turned out that Col. Mark C. Anarumo, the university’s president, was his new hallmate.
