What's On Tonight: March 9, 2021: The Flash thinks!

(The CW, 8 p.m.): It’s been a long road for Barry Allen. First he was just a normal extremely young CSI professional for a fictional police department, and then he got zapped by a particle accelerator and became the Flash. Then he figured out how to time travel, and then he time-traveled really badly and screwed everything up, and then a bunch of other stuff happened and he developed other super-speed-related powers. Flash-punches! Flash-wall-climbing! Flash-pancake-making! Here we are many seasons later and Barry Allen is still developing new super-skills, and tonight’s is one that might have come in handy back when he was accidentally flashpointing John Diggle’s kid out of existence: speed-thinking!

Infinite Country by Patricia Engel review: A novel like few others

Graphic: Natalie Peeples
In the compulsively readable
Infinite Country, author Patricia Engel travels between all manner of borders, figurative and otherwise. The 2011 PEN/Hemingway finalist moves from the intimate—taking inspiration from the lives of family members—to the universal, in the shared history of migration. Many storytellers get tripped up on such a journey, as they end up crafting either what’s deemed too specific a story (and “not relatable enough”) or, in an attempt to represent what is actually a disparate group of people and cultures, they reduce individuals to totems. While Engel’s expediency with detail occasionally prevents parts of the story from taking root, it keeps the novel from stopping in its tracks.

Virtual Events for The Week of March 4-11

Image: Coutesy of Amazon Studios/Prime Video
Happy Black Herstory Month! (or Women’s History Month, as it’s also known.) We’re back with another edition of virtual events, this time spanning across various genres in arts, entrepreneurship and entertainment. I know we’re nothing but four days in, but this month feels like it’s gonna be a good one. How do I know? Honestly, I don’t. But I’d like to think that one of the traits of being a woman—and specifically a Black woman—is resiliency, and the ability to make the best out of any situation. Even though March of 2020 came in and showed her WHOLE BEHIND last year, we have to have faith that

Superman & Lois CW Pilot Review: DC's Man of Steel Done Right

The debut pilot for the CW's latest DC Comics show feels like unlike anything we've seen in the Arrowverse so far, taking Supergirl's Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as Superman and Lois Lane and giving them a heaping dose of complex family drama.

Best Batman The Brave and The Bold Episodes Streaming on HBO Max

The show is a lot of fun, but...
...well, DC’s been having this problem for a while now with Batman going from “one of their three most iconic and popular characters” to “the only character that DC seems to actually like anymore”, with Batman’s abilities getting ratcheted up to insane levels more and more frequently.
And yeah, Brave and the Bold really played into that. Now, granted, most of the time that was the joke. Batman was the hypercompetent badass that was good at everything, but the focus of the actual episodes tended to be on the supporting characters. But as the Bat Obsession with DC and WB has gotten worse and worse, stuff like Brave and the Bold suffers because you start going “...er, we’re still joking about Batman being hypercompetent at everything, right?” when looking at it all.
