It was an area known as Black Wall Street. Hundreds of people were killed, and thousands lost their homes. âThe money and wealth that was lost, there were people there who were millionaires who died broke, never recaptured,â said Rev. Horace Sheffield, Chairman of Restore Black Wall Street Project. âThey estimated over $2.5 million lost in that year, is probably $200 million now.â
Hill Harper, who stars on ABC's "The Good Doctor" and owns Detroit’s Roasting Plant Coffee, is a co-chair on the Restore Black Wall Street Project. He met with two survivors in Tulsa on the weekend of the centennial.
Edwards served as master of ceremonies during Tuesday s groundbreaking ceremony for Saint Stephen s Way. Crews will construct a gated complex of 40 three-bedroom apartments along the southern shoreline of Crane Creek, off Lipscomb Street and Brothers Avenue. Founded in 2016, Saint Stephen s Way is a Melbourne nonprofit dedicated to providing affordable housing for homeless families with children who attend school in Brevard. The National Low Income Housing Coalition reports that Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford has the seventh-most-severe shortage of affordable rental homes for extremely low-income renters among America s 50 largest metropolitan areas. That NLIHC report was released in March 2020 at the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic.
