“They are killing us in Colombia,” cried Lucas Villa, 37, in several videos circulating on social networks, as well as others in which he appears in demonstrations or on open-air wheels in which he explains the points problems of the tax reform that the Colombian government wants to implement. This is the bill that began to transform Colombia on the 28th.
At 37, Lucas Villa is studying sports science at Pereira. His friends describe him as happy, peaceful, outgoing and partying. The day he was hit, the last message he sent to friends via his cell phone was “Now in Colombia, being young and being on the streets is life threatening.” We can all die here, but how can we not go out and protest? “.

Repression against people protesting

Repression against people protesting
Since 28 April, thousands of people took the streets across the country calling for the withdrawal of a tax reform and for better social and economic measures in a national strike (“Paro Nacional”) called by several social movements. The authorities responded by deploying the military to several cities, publicly stigmatizing protestors, and crushing protests with excessive use of force, including with weapons causing dozens of deaths, and hundreds of injured, arbitrarily detained and disappeared. We call on the President to guarantee the people’s right to peaceful assembly. TAKE ACTION

Image of Iván Duke collapses after protests left 19 dead

A failed attempt at tax reform detonated violent protests in Colombia, which left at least 19 dead and ended up forcing the resignation of the Minister of Economy as well as affecting strongly the image of President Ivan Duque.
The initiative had been launched on April 15 to be debated in Congress with the aim of raising approximately $6.3 billion, equivalent to 2% of the GDP and tackling doubt commitments in a context of credit growth.
The Colombian economy depends on market access and, according to official data, the country's External debt reached $156.8 billion or more than half of Colombia's GDP is reverted to the debt.

Review: J Balvin's 'The Boy from Medellin" documentary explores his rise to music prominence – The Daily Aztec

There are more than a handful of monotonous music documentaries. “The Boy From Medellín” is not one of them.
With a protagonist that has doubts and dreams worth exploring, “The Boy From Medellín” is one of the few docs pinpointing a single moment in a musician’s life that was worth making into a movie. I’m not speaking of films that recount tragic musical events (“Gimme Shelter”), cinematic chronicles of an eventful life (“Amy,” “Everybody’s Everything”) or even lavish home-concert transplants (“Homecoming,” “Amazing Grace”). I’m referencing the documentaries that place you into an artist’s daily routine as they’re about to embark on a big tour, concert or new creative venture.

Demonstrators took to the streets to protest against tax reforms, which were later cancelled
The United Nations' human rights office has accused Colombia's security forces of using excessive force against protesters.
The UN said it was particularly shocked by events in Cali on Monday, where it said police had fired on protesters.
It said that fatalities had been reported but it not yet been able to verify how many.
On Monday, Colombia's ombudsman said at least 19 people had died during a week of unrest over proposed tax reforms.

Vandalizing Colombia's corporate media

April 29, 2021
The directors of weekly Semana and television network RCN should really not be surprised that people vandalized their offices after so many insults.
Semana director Vicky Davila seemed clueless why people would vandalize the offices of these news outlets and accused “politicians and even some colleagues” of sowing hatred.
This attack, undoubtedly, is the fruit of the hatred of some politicians and even some colleagues — because let’s tell it like it is — who have been promoting and sowing the seeds of this hatred that we are seeing and God forbid doesn’t end in attacks against human life.

Calls for Colombian riot police to be disbanded after protester loses eye in clashes

CALLS are growing for Colombia’s special riot squad to be disbanded after a 24-year-old man lost his left eye during a protest against police violence in the capital Bogota earlier this week.
Gareth Steven was injured when the Mobile Anti-Riot Squadron (Esmad) went on the rampage, attacking a peaceful demonstration and seriously injuring at least four people.
Among them were three officials from the Bogota mayoral office, one of whom was hit in the leg with a stone during the protest marking the National Day Against Police Abuse on Wednesday.
Mr Steven was rushed to a nearby hospital after being hit on the cheek by an officer, but medics were unable to save his eye.
