Three organizations filed separate lawsuits Friday in an effort to stop UCSF from building a 2 million-square-foot hospital and academic facility expansion at its historic Parnassus campus.
The groups that filed lawsuits in Alameda Superior Court — San Franciscans for Balanced and Livable Communities, the Parnassus Neighborhood Coalition and the Yerba Buena Neighborhood Consortium — seek to overturn a decision by the University of California Board of Regents to allow the Parnassus expansion to go forward.
They argue that constructing a large, regional hospital on a dense hillside sandwiched between two residential neighborhoods would have severe environmental impacts on everything from traffic to air quality to public transportation. They argue that the impact of the project was not adequately considered in the environmental study UCSF completed for the development.

From the window in his Shipyard condominium, Dean Talanehzar likes to sit and watch the backhoes and bulldozers pushing dirt around for the next phase of San Francisco’s biggest development project.
While the coming building won’t be particularly big — 77 units out of 12,000 planned on a former Navy base and nearby Candlestick Point — he is heartened because the developer is bullish enough to keep working despite the pandemic and the unresolved toxic cleanup issues in the surrounding parcels.

In early January, anonymous attack posters were slipped into mailboxes and left on doorsteps in San Francisco’s Sunset District.
The poster read, “No Slums In The Sunset.” It informed residents that a “7-story, 100-unit high-rise slum” was planned for the neighborhood and predicted that within two years the property in question — at 26th Avenue and Irving Street — would “become the best place in San Francisco to buy heroin.”

San Francisco’s rental housing market is starting the new year much as it ended the old one: Rents are dropping, vacancies are climbing, and landlords and tenants alike are muddling through the pandemic’s 10th month without knowing when — or whether — life and work will return to normal.
An Apartment List report released Tuesday shows that rents in San Francisco, the country’s most expensive market, dipped 2.7% in December and have dropped 26.7% since March, pushing the median two-bedroom monthly rent from over $3,000 to to $2,305. A report from another group, Zumper, had rents down 24% year over year.
