Water quality advocates see protection in the United States Environmental Protection Agency's hazardous substance designation for two of the most common PFAS, PFOA and PFOS. PFAS have an especially toxic legacy in West Virginia stemming from the Washington Works facility originally operated by DuPont near Parkersburg.

Efforts are underway in Stuart to hold the state of Florida accountable for falling short on their clean water responsibilities.

The West Virginia Rivers Coalition has threatened to sue Chemours over what the group says are lingering violations of the Clean Water Act tied to PFAS at the company's Washington Works plant near Parkersburg. Chemours says the United States Environmental Protection Agency has yet to approve a PFAS remediation plan the agency required the company to submit in a consent order in April 2023.
