A key issue. jonathan karl is on capitol hill. reporter: the new republicans have arrived, and they ve already drawn blood. just hours after republican leader mitch mcconnell met with the 13 new republican senators, he caved on a top tea party issue. doing away with congressional pet projects known as earmarks. banning earmarks is another small but important symbolic step that we can take to show that we re serious. reporter: a total reversal. this was mcconnell less than two weeks ago. you could eliminate every congressional earmark and you would save no money. reporter: mcconnell s flip comes after both the president and incoming speaker of the house john boehner also endorsed the earmark ban. the incoming house republican class began arriving over the weekend. ....
Getting spending under control, we have to grow the economy, they are not talking points but real things to to. this earmark ban sends a good message. are earmarks, the vast majority of federal spending? no but it is showing it is time to clamp down and make tough choices. now we have to make a real change. neil: how do you get along this orientation week? i am told you are like bulls in a china shop, and a lot of the establishment guys say you are unruly, and what is it? guest: it is going very well. it has been amazing the class has gelled very well, and we understand, we all share why we are here in washington, dc. we are sent with a mandate. and the class is coming without legislative experience but with real world experience. so it is a vast group, and it has been good getting to know each other and we understand that we have to come to washington, dc and well not change things on january 6th, ....
Test as to whether or not the republican establishment here in washington gets what the tea party movement was all about? chris, this is not just the tea party movement. this is a 70% issue, with the american people. right now we have over 500 congressmen and senators who are in washington who think it is their job to bring home the bacon. and, that takes your eye avenue this ball. we are not working on important national issues. when we are trying to pay the loc pave the local parking lot. john boehner, eric cantor, the houses leadership and everyone in the house has gotten the message they ll push for an earmark ban and just about every new republican freshman is pushing for the earmark ban and i think we ll win the vote because i think most of the republicans in the senate have gotten a clear message from the american people we need to stop wasteful spending. chris: you say most people have gotten the message, apparently not all of the top republicans in the senate, ....
