In Ecuador, recent polls have shown a narrowing lead for Arauz, a protege of former President Rafael Correa, a leftist sentenced to prison for corruption who fled to Belgium. Correa, who remains a divisive figure here, has denied the allegations and called them politically motivated.

Voters go to the polls Sunday to elect new presidents in two neighboring South American nations — Ecuador and Peru — that have been battered by the pandemic, economic contractions and political turmoil.
In both Andean countries, polls have shown widespread dissatisfaction with leadership failures to stem rising unemployment and poverty, much of it fallout from the COVID-19 crisis — which has hit Latin America especially hard, causing social and economic devastation across the region.

Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno on Monday named an experienced surgeon as the Andean country's health minister, following the previous minister's resignation following accusations of irregularities in a pilot program for coronavirus vaccinations. Rodolfo Farfan, 63, will replace Juan Carlos Zevallos, who is under investigation by state prosecutors for mishandling the vaccine rollout after he participated in an inoculation effort at a nursing home where his mother lives. Zevallos resigned on Friday.

Ecuadorian police on Tuesday said at least 62 people had been killed in prison mutinies in three separate facilities.
News of the violence comes as Ecuador struggles to deal with prison overcrowding and frequent violence between gangs.
