DOD's 5G-powered smart warehouse network kicks off -- Defense Systems

The Marine Corps Logistics Command in Albany, Ga., is gearing up for a 5G-enabled smart warehouse that will feature robotics, barcode scanning and holographic, augmented and virtual reality applications to help manage storage and maintenance of vehicles, materiel and supplies.
A Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS)-enabled private 5G wireless network is being installed as part of a multi-year initiative to create a 5G smart warehouse reference design. The framework will help the Marines increase the efficiency and dependability of warehouse operations, including improvements to receipt, storage, issuance, inventory control and auditability, according to a press statement from Federated Wireless, the project’s prime contractor. ....

For a while after Joe Biden was recognized as the victor in the November presidential election, political punditry wondered which direction he would go: pro- or anti-Big Tech?
That has been clearly answered, as Biden installed several Silicon Valley influencers on his transition team, which in turn have helped populate his administration with former Big Tech executives.
Tops among them has been former Google/Alphabet CEO/Chairman Eric Schmidt, whose role hasn’t been formalized by name, but his presence certainly has been.
It’s not Schmidt’s ties to the search engine tech giant that are of greatest interest any more. Instead it’s his role as board member and top investor on a shiny new defense contractor that specializes in artificial intelligence technology, called Rebellion Defense, that is concerning because of a likely conflict of interest for Schmidt. ....

DOD, NTIA pushing open 5G stack ecosystem -- Defense Systems

The Defense Department and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration announced they plan to issue a challenge to accelerate development of software and telecom technologies for an open 5G stack ecosystem in support of DOD missions.
According to a notice of inquiry posted by NTIA in the Federal Register, today’s open 5G stack community is diverse. Various organizations are working on different parts of the technology stack, and many implementations are custom built, which hinders interoperability.
For DOD, officials said the challenge supports its 5G Initiative to “accelerate the development of the open 5G stack ecosystem in support of Department of Defense missions.” ....
