UC Creates Campaign in Favor of Multicultural Center, Launches Water Filter Distribution | News


The Undergraduate Council voted to pass legislation initiating a student-based campaign to advocate for the creation of a multicultural center at Harvard, as well as legislation to launch a program to disperse water filters to students during a Sunday meeting.
The first act establishes a UC effort which expands on the body’s past advocacy for a multicultural center at Harvard, which in turn built upon five decades of student efforts.
“The student body has been in deep advocacy of a space to convene and appreciate shared identities,” the legislation reads.
The text of the legislation cites other peer institutions that have made similar centers that students met with “great excitement.”

UC Calls For Ivy League Mental Health Reform, Funds Project Supporting Gender Non-Conforming Students | News


The Undergraduate Council endorsed an all-Ivy League statement on mental health and allocated funds toward a project supporting transgender and gender non-conforming students in purchasing gender-affirming clothing at its regular meeting Sunday.
The first piece of legislation allows the Council to sign onto an all-Ivy League mental health statement that calls for BIPOC mental health care, active “comp” oversight, increased counseling services, and leave of absence policy reform.
“Mental health is the 2nd leading cause of death among students and 75% of lifetime cases of mental health conditions begin by age 24,” the statement reads.
The statement also details that no Ivy League university scored above a D+ on the Ruderman Foundation scale, which measures university effectiveness in responding to students experiencing mental illness.

UC Endorses Petitions in Support of Cornel West and Against Statements by J. Mark Ramseyer | News


The Undergraduate Council voted to endorse a pair of statements during its Sunday night meeting — one supporting a petition to grant tenure to Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy Cornel R. West ’74, and another to condemn statements made by Harvard Law professor J. Mark Ramseyer.
The first piece of legislation demands the University “reopen pathways for Professor West’s tenure and further commit to advancing racial justice in substantive ways.”
West recently threatened to leave Harvard for the second time after he said the University dismissed his request to be considered for tenure. He held Harvard’s highest faculty rank, University Professor, before leaving Harvard in 2002 following a high-profile spat with then-University president Lawrence H. “Larry” Summers. West returned as a Professor of the Practice in 2017, a position that lacks tenure.

UC Renews Summer Storage Program, Petitions to Stop CAMHS Late Fees | News


The Undergraduate Council voted on Sunday to restore its summer storage program and to petition for the removal of the Harvard Counseling and Mental Health Services’ recent $25 fee for last-minute cancellations and missed appointments.
The first piece of legislation renewed its summer storage program with Five Star Movers for the 2021 year to financially assist up to 400 College students, allocating $32,000 in funding. Five thousand dollars will come from the UC’s own funds and the remaining $27,000 will come from remaining storage funds, faculty deans, and students benefiting from the program.
In 2019, the UC’s summer storage program accommodated up to 500 College students. In 2020, the College partnered with Olympia Moving and Storage to assist students with their rapid move-outs in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Adams House Faculty Deans Announce Retirement | News


Adams House faculty deans Judith S. Palfrey ’67 and John G. “Sean” Palfrey ’67 will retire from their positions at the end of the academic year, the pair announced in a Wednesday email to Adams House affiliates.
When they arrived at Adams House in 1999, Judith and John Palfrey were the only faculty deans unaffiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, working as professors at Harvard Medical School and Boston University of Medicine, respectively. Today, they are the longest-serving pair of current faculty deans.
The pair said in an interview that they are grateful for the two decades they spent serving in their roles at Adams House.
