Torre, who turns 70 in November, joins Polish-Argentine Grandmaster Miguel Najdorf and GM Judit Polgar of Hungary following FIDE Council’s approval of their nomination during its online meeting on Monday, April 20.
The FIDE historical committee composed of chairman Willy Iclicki of Belgium, Andrzej Filipowicz of Poland, Berik Balgabaev of Kazakhstan and Casto Abundo of the Philippines nominated them.
“It’s a great honor to be included in the revered list of names who I hold in high esteem. This I share with my countrymen,” said Torre.

Ten Filipino sports heroes will be inducted in the fourth batch of the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame later this year and each will receive a bigger cash incentive.
The cash token saw an increase from P100,000 to P200,000 to help the new batch of Hall of Famers with their needs during these trying times amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have increased the amount of the token because of the needs in these times,” said Anna Christine Abellana, secretariat head of the PSHOF, during the PSC Hour program of the Radyo Pilipinas Dos on Friday, February 19.
“As what our selection committee said, we are honoring people who have already retired. Some of them are regularly taking medicine,” added Abellana.

Philippines assured of slot in FIDE World Cup ’21
MANILA, Philippines — At least one Filipino will get to play in the FIDE World Cup 2021 set late this year in Minsk, Belarus.
This after the Philippines received one of the 100 seats allotted by FIDE, which recently increased the number of participants from 128 to 206. The biennial event awards a couple of berths in the Candidates Tournament, an eight-player double round-robin event to decide the challenger for the World Championship.
“The top 100 countries all over the world were given wild card seats and we will give that one spot to our national champion this year,” said National Chess Federation of the Philippines executive director Cliburn Orbe.

A true league of legends
Online games have been a part of everyday life for many Filipinos even before the pandemic. But during the community quarantines, online platforms, such as various forms of digital entertainment, have redefined what it means to be connected. Apart from the bonds made, these have also become an inspiration for Filipino creatives as they design and empower characters of their own.
That is what graphic artist
Ran Carmona did. He channeled the aesthetic of mobile game
League of Legends to his artworks producing avatars inspired by Filipino champions: boxing champ

In a virtual media conference hosted by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) on Wednesday, PCAP, which recently got its government license to operate a professional league, said it is bullish of its plans as it provides another platform for players to showcase what they can do and give chess its due recognition as a sport that Filipinos can excel in.

GAMES and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra will lead the introductory press conference of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) on Thursday via Google meet.
Joining him are PCAP founding commissioner, Atty. Paul Elauria, and other league officials.
Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. believes more top players will come out from the grassroots level with the advent of the country’s first-ever professional chess league.
Antonio, a 13-time national champion, is among the invited speakers in the launching of the league.
“This will inspire kids to play chess, like the way the PBA inspired kids to play basketball,” Antonio said. “It will be another motivation for them to get better and aim higher.”

Who is Asia’s first chess grandmaster? Everyone knows it is Eugene Torre. Who is Asia’s second chess grandmaster? Strangely enough many people get this wrong, the correct answer is Rosendo Balinas.
Balinas was considered the strongest Asian player during the 1960s and early 1970s, before the emergence of compatriot Eugenio Torre. “Bali” won international chess tournaments in Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila, and Odessa, USSR, during the period. At the 1966 17th Chess Olympiad in Havana, Cuba, Balinas scored 15½ points out of 20 games and was awarded the individual silver medal award, behind gold medalist Mikhail Tal, who scored 11 points out of 13 games. In the 1967 Meralco “Beat Bobby Fischer” match series in Manila, of the top 10 Filipino players, Balinas was the only then Philippine national master to hold the future world champion to a draw:

Memorable endgames | BusinessWorld

By Bobby Ang
We continue our discussion from where we left off last Tuesday — nowadays we have the benefit of the endgame tablebases to assist us in the analysis of endgames. As explained then an endgame tablebase is a computerized database that contains precalculated exhaustive analysis of chess endgame positions. They are generated by working backwards from a checkmated position. Thus, the tablebase acts as an oracle, always providing the optimal moves.
By 2005 all chess positions with up to six pieces (you include the Kings when you count pieces, therefore KRP vs KRP is considered a six-piece ending) had been solved. By August 2012, tablebases had solved chess for every position with up to seven pieces.

Knight endgames are hard | BusinessWorld

Last Thursday we studied the Knight-and-Pawn Endgame in Alekseenko vs. Giri. Nowadays we have the benefit of the endgame tablebases to assist us in the analysis of these endgames. As
BW readers know an endgame tablebase is a computerized database that contains precalculated exhaustive analysis of chess endgame positions. They are generated by working backwards from a checkmated position. Thus, the tablebase acts as an oracle, always providing the optimal moves.
Before the development of the tablebases, chessplayers had to work out the do’s and don’ts of endgame play with their own brains. Do you know that the theory of that specific knight and pawn endgame in Alekseenko vs. Giri was first brought to light by GM Eugene Torre in the crucial game Torre vs. Portisch from the 1982 Toluca Interzonal?

Former Filipino-Australian chess prodigy Arianne Bo Caoili passed away on Monday two weeks after figuring in a road accident in Yerevan, Armenia. She was 33.
Her husband, Armenian Grandmaster Levon Aronian, announced her death through his Twitter account.
“I have no words to express the grievance over my wife Arianne’s death,” Aronian wrote on Twitter.
“She was intelligent, hard-working and joyous person that lived a beautiful life. I love you honeybun, sleep tight.”
On 15 March, Caoili crashed into a supporting column under the bridge near the intersection of Sebastia Street and Isakov Avenue in Yerevan.
