and, bret, because this is a state case, a presidential pardon would do no good for the potential targets of this investigation. and georgia also has strict laws concerning pardons. they are actually handled by a state panel that can only take action after you've served all your time and paid all your fines. bret? >> bret: jonathan, i mentioned at the beginning but earlier today reuters had this post and they reported that fulton county temporarily published a list of charges against the former president before removing it from their website. what came about all of that? >> yeah. it certainly fueled a lot of speculation. the clerk of courts very rapidly issued a statement calling the document fictitious. the statement went on to say documents that do not bear an official case number, filing date, and the name of the clerk of courts in concert are not considered official filings and should not be treated as such. the trump team quickly fired back in a statement of their own
not a matter of if but when and they want answers why these documents may have already been drawn up and posted before a grand jury vote. we begin tonight with correspondent jonathan serrie in atlanta outside the courthouse. good evening, jonathan. >> good evening, bret. the case appears to be moving rapidly with at least two witnesses originally scheduled to testify on tuesday being called to the court house this afternoon. one of them, former lt. governor jeff duncan, a republican who has been highly critical of the former president trump and george cheaty, a chils who says he walked in on a meeting of alternate electors who attempted to certify georgia's 2020 election for then president trump after his narrow loss to joe biden. earlier today, the grand jury heard from two former democratic state lawmakers including former senator jen jerry continue attended a post election hearing

in jurisdictions outside delaware. hunter biden's attorney already suggesting if that happens, political pressure will be the cause. >> if the now special counsel decides not to go by the deal, then it will mean that he or they decided that something other than the facts and the law are coming into play. the question should be asked. what infected the process? >> add that skepticism from biden's orbit to criticism from the right over weiss' investigation so far. >> not only did weiss drag his feet for five years and try to negotiate a sweetheart plea deal with the president's son, he also let the statute of limitations run out. >> and the result is more questions about public trust in the doj, which the white house is refusing to answer. >> how can the white house assure people that the case involving the president's son is being handled fairly. >> anything that has been stated or said by hunter's representative i would have to refer you to his representative.
>> support weiss going before congress asking questions for the sake of transparency? >> that is up to the department of justice. >> well the department of justice already said that weiss would testify before congress after august recess saying they supported that in order to bolster public confidence in this probe. although weiss has since then been appointed to the special counsel status. any efforts to renege on that offer might be complicated by the doj's own past statements because they have maintained all along that weiss was the ultimate authority in this case and had the ability to bring charges wherever and whenever he wanted, bret. >> bret: jacqui, the president spent several hours on the beach at rehoboth beach, delaware yesterday. when he was leaving, after that, reporters asked him about the rising death toll in hawaii, specifically maui, those wildfires. take a listen. >> mr. president, any comments on the rising death toll in
with trump's personal lawyer. in that meeting critics say rudy giuliani tried to convince georgia legislators to overturn the election based on what they say are discredited allegations of improper vote counting in fulton county. others in mr. trump's circle are accused of allowing a computer forensic's team unauthorized access to election equipment data in georgia's rural coffee county. fulton district attorney fani willis is expected to broad racketeering laws as she has in previous cases such as a test cheating scandal involving educators in atlanta public schools. she talks about how it's a good tool to be able to show a jury the broad scope of an alleged crime. and bring in all sorts of different elements that maybe if she was going for a more tailored charge she wouldn't be able to bring up as evidence in the case. >> on social media, the former president posted how can they charge me in georgia in the phone call was perfect. witch-hunt.
he's not a special counsel. he is a clash clasht. >> hunter biden the case belongs in the justice process. can you lay that play out and i think it needs to be as transparent as possible. >> we have to make sure that the evidence we put forward before any kind of vote like it like that is overwhelming that it's undeniable and that the american people see what we have seen greg steubey and others republican congressman. s that back and forth continues and more testimony being released the fbi testimony from the house oversight committee the transport being released notified by special assistant agent in charge we would not be allowed to approach the house. this is about being tipped off about a possible hunter biden interview. the question was have you ever been told you could wait outside the target's home until they
hyde. katie, keep on getting a little bit more. a little bit more. and this obviously backs up what the whistleblower was saying to congress. >> it's corroboration of this idea and this allegation that has been made and proven now with multiple testimony from an fbi whistleblower as a 20-year career. irs whistleblower who put everything on the table to come forward to congress and to talk with you about this case being handled inappropriately. and with political influence in a place where david weiss, the u.s. attorney was in charge of this. this is now the person who is the special counsel, who blew past the statutes of limitations which when you talk to federal prosecutors, they say that's the cardinal sin of when you are a doj prosecutor to do that. and actually would result in your firing in a lot of cases and, yet, now we have david weiss in charge of this moving forward. it also cuts against this argument that the biden administration has made from the white house repeatedly that this has been an independent investigation. that this is something that has been handled properly and that
where the document if you loom at it case number donald john trump on it and a list of charges. so, moving forward, if this indictment comes out, it will be interesting to compare the actual indictment with what they were posting. but the trump team has, you know, misgivings about the fact that it was posted before the grand jury. >> bret: voted. >> voted and finished deliberations. this seems like a huge problem. this comes after the jury foreperson earlier this year was on media doing a number of interviews talking about this process which the trump team had said may hurt the d.a.'s case against him. >> you know, the politics of this is interesting. we have seen every indictment, stef has emboldened the president in g.o.p. primary numbers and even in fundraising. "wall street journal" obviously with e. obviously has a point of view but saying this could be the one that fatigue starts setting. in you wonder if that's the case. >> i have actually done some digging through some of the social media data and google trends data. we have seen with each indictment that's come out that
