talking about here is capitalism. i'm not discounting, of course the incredible disparity but what it shows is that if people don't pay attention and that's when the story line for women's sports for generations. then this is what we're going to see. the great news here is now the spotlight is shining on it and it's going to change a contract, the contract that tv contract is up. and there'll be new negotiations and caitlin clark will of course show the incredible difference and the interests. and it will be a much, much bigger contract. & better salaries moving forward in the next few years because of caitlin clark and when you look at the money that she's gonna be making outside of basketball, that is quite substantial. she signed deals with gatorade with a state farm. she could soon have a massive deal with nike and her own signature shoe, i believe but that obviously doesn't change the fact that she's only making $76,000 in her first year. >> so you do expect things to change and how quickly do you

voters who have lower levels of education, but strong all across the board. it lines up with what we saw in the polling that we saw in the last few days on issues like a strong leader, good on the economy and all these things seam to be bearing fruit for him in iowa. >> one story is whether the former president can get over 50%. it's possible that he will. >> we weren't expecting to make a call this early in the evening. it seems like do you have any understanding of how overwhelming the victory was? you say it will be over 50%? >> i'm not saying it will. it will be close. if he does that's another story line. he is well ahead of governor desantis and former governor haley and vivek ramaswamy is running a distant fourth. battle for silver medal in iowa is going to be something that takes time tonight. >> we also have a strong turnout.

potentially beat him in this nomination fight, whether or not he can actually keep his campaign going because there are real questions about whether he can come in with that second-place finish that everyone that i'm talking to here on the ground says he absolutely needs to avoid questions about whether or not he's going to have to end his campaign here in the next week or so. of course, the story line across -- across the entire race really has been nikki haley and her late surge here, that critical des moines register poll done by ann seltzer for every one of these contests put her into second place for the first time here in this state. but the question of course can she actually perform up to expectations. really the question, guys, the cold, it is really, really bad enough that it is going to affect whether or not people get out. i think the question about those numbers, they were asking people last week are you going to come out to caucus, a lot of them, particularly for ron desantis said yes, they were going to. it's a lot different when you

here is the statewide result. five counties in 2016 went for marco rubio. not many counties, polk county where the state county is, biggest county in the state, almost 17% of the vote will come from polk county, rubio won it. why was rubio winning these counties, these are counties that tend to be urban, suburban, high concentration of college degrees, higher income. that was rubio's core base in 2016. that is also nikki haley's core base in these caucuses. you take a look at polk county, the big bedroom communities of dallas county, right outside des moines. johnson county, iowa city. if haley is going to have a breakout showing, this has to be the core of it. the five rubio counties, is she winning any of them, rolling up big numbers there? that could get her second place, could get her a strong story line she's looking to have coming out of tonight. >> steve kornacki, thank you.

you have heard, the little you have heard up to this point. >> reporter: i'm -- >> i'm decided. >> how did you know that was an option to watch write him? >> i was following the news on the dnc's position on changing the first in the nation primary, and the ad campaign he has been pushing has been informative also. >> reporter: you've seen the ads? >> yes. >> reporter: you voted for trump twice, why are you considering another candidate? >> just looking at it with fresh eyes, compared to the issues in 2016 and 2020, it's a completely different country right now, i felt. so i think that with new issues maybe somebody might bring something fresh to the table. >> reporter: and i'm glad we included that sound from the biden voter because that is another story line in new hampshire. in iowa, it's all about the republicans. that's where all the action is taking place. here, biden and the dnc are not officially part of the primary

million in iowa for tonight's caucuses. what does that say about the importance of what's about to happen? >> well, it's important to win the votes, but also, what are they buying? narrative? momentum? they're buying a story line. if you're donald trump, you're trying to buy dominance. if you're nikki haley, you're trying to buy momentum. and if you're ron desantis, you might have been trying to buy the comeback kid narrative. i would point out inside that spending, the candidate who by far has been the biggest recipient of negative ads, ron desantis. i think outside groups have spent about $48 million on negative ads against desantis which is more than trump and biden have faced combined. so you can see at least early on, that was a candidate they were worried about, and they did bury him with it. >> as we say in politics, money talks for sure. jamal simmons, trump bureau this on his social media site earlier. he said "nikki haley could never win in the general election because she doesn't have maga and never will," make america

big chill for desantis and as for south carolina, i note that it's right on the way to tallahassee, which is where he may end occupy on tuesday morning. >> yeah, i mean, if he's going to withdraw from the race, he's going to certainly high tail it out of all those early contest states. and david, the question i was going to get to because you mentioned the des moines register poll earlier. this is typically when all the campaigns and their advisers and i'm sure you were there doing this, too, in 2008. scott, maybe you as wellf. waiting for that des moines register to come out. it is coming out within the next couple of hours. it really has potential to change the story line here. can you talk about that? >> yeah, well, look. i remember sending people down to the loading dock at the des moines register to try and grab a copy of the paper before it, as soon as it landed on the loading dock to be shipped out.

obviously haley's movement over the course of the primary is probably the most interesting story line. and i think desantis has essentially said numerous times that he expects to win in iowa, that he sort of has to win iowa. so for him this is -- really feel like monday is a do or die moment. it's just hard to see another path for him. haley obviously has a convincing case about her standing in new hampshire, and then we go to her home state of south carolina. obviously trump heavily favored there, too, but she can make a case having been the governor of south carolina. hard to see a path for desantis. so if these numbers hold, i would expect this probably becomes a two-person race really quickly. >> and stuart, i mean you and i -- i used to see you out on the campaign trail when you were working with mitt romney, and he had that close shave in iowa with rick santorum, which was a little bit of a surprise. but usually this poll is not too far off. and i keep coming back to this

>> yeah. and of course the weather is a big wild card in all this. jeff, standby. i want to bring in ron brownstein, our cnn political contributor and analyst. and ron, you're hearing jeff zeleny read off these numbers, and we don't want to have this skate by too quickly. if we can show the viewers at home these numbers one more time. there you have donald trump at 48%, nikki haley at 28%. she has passed ron desantis according to this des moines register poll. ron desantis at 16%, and rivek ramaswamy not much of a factor here at 8%. ron brownstein, donald trump -- there's a story line about nikki haley versus ron desantis and of course we can talk about that. but what jeff zeleny was talking about a few moments ago, this poll showing donald trump so far ahead, a former president now leading the republican party with all the legal questions hanging over him being cast as a threat to democracy by the sitting president, joe biden who

most committed. and at the end of the day, who is going to really show up. >> and trump has dominated the polling in iowa. there will be a more recent one later on this evening. it will be interesting to see if he is able to maintain his lead. how important will that second place finisher be in your view? >> it is everything really. i mean, the story line is not going to be so much trump winning, it will be who is second and if so by how much. nikki haley needs a second place showing. she could even run a strong third because she has most of her eggs in the new hampshire basket. but ron desantis has to place send. h oig. he's invested everything in iowa. so if he can't do anything better than third, that probably puts him out of the race. so survival thing for both. >> is the iowa voter different in your view? do you see them as looking for some specific or very different
