Excitement brews for NCAA D-II Elite Eight Play in Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) -- Just ahead of the NCAA Division II men's basketball Elite Eight at Ford Center, excitement brews for a week of postseason basketball play, especially inside the DoubleTree hotel across the street from Ford Center where all eight teams are staying this week. We're all super, super excited. As you can see when you walk in, we've got all of the decals on the floor, on the doorways, when you come in the elevators," DoubleTree Director of Sales Kendra Hines says. "We've got a big bracket at the front. The staff is super excited. We talk about it every morning at our huddle -- who do we think is going to advance? But, of course, we don't say anything about it." Eyewitness News is told most of the rooms are booked through Sunday to accommodate the teams, staff and fans. Just a few of the fans coming to town are Kevin and Bonnie McDermott from Palatine, Illinois, just outside Chicago. They have come to follow the Ferris State Bulldogs -- the team Kevin serves as a volunteer athletics photographer. The McDermotts even traveled with the team when the Bulldogs won the national championship in 2018 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. But how has Evansville treated them since checking-in on Saturday? "I've explored the downtown a bit, and I think it's just really quaint and it's nice," Bonnie says. "So many things are close together. "She found the cat café, so she's just delirious. Couldn't wait to tell me that," Kevin says.

The Ferris State Bulldogs are slated to announce the program's next class of incoming recruits as the Bulldogs gear up for National Signing Day on Wednesday (Feb. 7).

FSU will take part in the annual nationwide festivities as NCAA Division II's winningest active head coach Tony Annese announces his staff's 13th class of incoming Bulldog recruits. Over the course of his tenure, Annese has landed the nation's top D2 recruiting class numerous times based on rankings from various sources.

The Bulldogs, who reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs for a nation-leading ninth consecutive time this past fall, expect to again land another stellar recruiting class. FSU has reached the NCAA Division II National Semifinals five times in the past seven seasons of action and ranks as the country's winningest program over the past nine full seasons in D2 Football.

Ferris State fans are encouraged to follow the Bulldogs' official football social media accounts for coverage throughout the day on Wednesday. Each National Letter-of-Intent signee will officially be announced on social media with graphics as their additions are finalized beginning early Wednesday morning. Updates will be posted during the day on facebook (@FerrisFootball), X-twitter (@FerrisFootball) and instagram (@FerrisStateFB).

Ferris State will also hold a live national signing day announcement and press conference on Wednesday at the Ewigleben Sports Complex starting at approximately 2 p.m. (ET). Local, regional and statewide media are welcome and encouraged to attend the national signing day event. The press conference will take place in the Gold Room overlooking the new Center for Athletics Performance near the new Bulldog Arena on the east end of the facility. Media are encouraged and requested to arrive early to be directed to the appropriate location.

Bulldog fans can also catch the event online as the entire class is unveiled and it will be streamed live online in high-definition via the Bulldog Sports Network on FSU's official athletics YouTube page. To view the stream, please visit this direct link - https://www.youtube.com/ferrisathletics

In addition to the announcement of this year's signing class, Coach Annese will be on hand during the press conference to provide comments about this year's National Letter-of-Intent signees as well as take questions from media members in attendance.

A complete list of Bulldog Football recruits and biographical information will be posted online at FerrisStateBulldogs.com following the event along with various highlights, photos, comments from Coach Annese and coverage throughout the day.

In addition to the announcement of this year's signing class, a video package featuring Coach Annese discussing this year's National Letter-of-Intent signees will also be part of FSU's "Signing Day" Central platform.

The Bulldogs claimed back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championships in 2021 and 2022 before concluding this past fall with an 8-3 overall record, which included a narrow setback to FCS National Runner-Up Montana. FSU is slated to open the 2024 campaign in late August with a national showdown at Pittsburg State (Kan.).

The nation's number one ranked Ferris State Bulldogs got off to a fast start and finished strong in a 38-17 home win on Saturday (Oct. 7) over visiting Saginaw Valley State at Top Taggart Field.

In the 48th consecutive meeting between the two longtime GLIAC opponents, the Bulldogs scored 14 points in the first five minutes of the game and built an early 14-0 lead before the Cardinals responded. FSU eventually scored 24 of the final 27 points in the game for the victory.

The Bulldogs opened strong as senior quarterback Mylik Mitchell hooked up with senior wideout Xavier Wade on a 41-yard scoring throw on FSU's initial offensive drive. Then, after getting the ball back, the duo hooked up again on a 58-yard TD completion to make it an early two-score game.

Saginaw Valley State tied the game up, though, in the second quarter with a pair of scoring drives. The first covered 80 yards and ended with Terrance Brown's 14-yard carry with the second concluding on Brown's six-yard scoring catch from Mike O'Horo with only 90 seconds left before halftime.

The Bulldogs, however, moved quickly down the field and scored just before intermission as Mitchell found Tyrese Hunt-Thompson on a 40-yard scoring play to cap a six-play, 82-yard drive, giving FSU a 21-14 lead heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs marched 71 yards in nine plays on their first possession with Mitchell Middleton booting a 21-yard field goal to make it a 24-14 edge. SVSU scored its only points of the second half on a 30-yard field goal five minutes later to cut the margin to 24-17.

From there, though, the Bulldogs controlled play and FSU found the endzone twice more. Mitchell found Wade again late in the third on a 28-yard scoring play to finish a 75-yard drive and then sealed the win with a six-yard TD pass to Hunt-Thompson with 2:46 left in the game.

For the day, the Bulldogs racked up 500 yards of total offense, including 279 in the air and 221 on the ground. Mitchell completed 12-of-14 throws for 262 yards and five TD's. Wade hauled in five catches for 158 yards and three scores while Hunt-Thompson had four grabs for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ground, Carson Gulker ran for a game-high 144 yards on 23 carries for the Bulldogs.

SVSU finished with 256 yards of offense, which included 149 on the ground. O'Horo paced the Cardinals with 64 yards rushing and completed 11-of-16 passes for 107 yards.

Defensively, senior end Olalere Oladipo had eight stops for the Bulldogs and a sack while Major Dedmond notched seven tackles.

The Bulldogs, now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC, head to Allendale next Saturday, Oct. 14, for the Anchor-Bone Classic at Lubbers Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. (ET).
