The 2020 Redistricting Process: Will the Courts Take It Over?
With or without COVID-19, the U.S. Census will be taken in 2020. The results of that Census will drive a round of reapportionment and redistricting for congressional seats and many state and local governing bodies in 2021. Even if the distribution of those results is delayed, as may happen, new plans must be in place before the 2022 election cycle; otherwise, the districts will be too malapportioned to be used again. In that case, the courts would step in.
