Kerning Cultures to launch documentary series on Lebanon's financial collapse

LONDON: Dubai-based podcast company Kerning Cultures Network announced on Tuesday the production of “The Lebanon Heist,” a new original documentary series about the country’s financial crisis. The production is a six-part podcast that investigates the root causes of Lebanon’s financial crisis, which has resulted in the loss of life savings for millions of Lebanese people.

Studio Kunukku: Beirut workshop hopes to revive Syrian craft of woodblock printing

Inside a rundown building at the heart of Beirut in Lebanon, young Syrian men are hard at work pounding a piece of white cloth with a hand-crafted stamp dipped in mahogany and deep brown.
They are among the last artisans to master
the old Syrian craft of woodblock printing.
“When you come across a block-printed piece, there is something about it in your memory, you feel like you’ve seen it before,” says Ward El Khalaf, 26, a Syrian designer at the recently launched Studio Kunukku.

Saving Lebanon's streets: the engineer with a sustainable fix


to replace stolen metal manhole covers on Lebanon’s streets with new, more sustainable ones.
Using recycled single-use plastic, the industrial and environmental engineer applies a technique known as extrusion to melt the raw material and form it into the required shape. In this case, Mr Abi Chaker repurposes plastic waste to make drain covers to replace stolen ones.
Where other people see rubbish, he sees opportunity.
“I’m an industrial engineer, so my job is to find resources for manufacturing,” Mr Abi Chaker told
The National. “But I’m also an environmental engineer, so I find these resources among discarded, recyclable material.”
