Tubular Bells est sûrement son album le plus populaire. Pourtant, certains jugeaient, au départ, cette musique invendable mais elle n'a eu de cesse d'évoluer. Est-ce que ces réserves étaient fondées ? Lorsque Oldfield a commencé à démarcher les maisons de disques pour présenter les petites maquettes de sa toute première composition, autrement dit le futur Tubular Bells, il avait juste 17-18 ans. Personne n'en a voulu parce que le potentiel commercial de cette musique étrange et entièrement instrumentale était loin d'être évident. D'autant qu'il avait enregistré sa musique tout seul sur un magnéto de fortune…
