The Iranian authorities knew immediately the cause of the crash of a Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) passenger plane near Tehran in January 2020.
This was reported by The New York Times, citing a leaked audio recording of the conversation of a man identified as Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
In particular, according to the recordings, Mr. Zarif said that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) knew immediately that their missiles had hit the plane, but only admitted to it three days later.
Soon after the plane was brought down, he attended a small meeting of the national security council with two top military commanders, and said the world was demanding an explanation.

In this file photo, IRGC Quds Force’s Deputy Commander Mohammad Hejazi is seen against a background picture of the force’s martyred commander, Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated in a US airstrike on January 3, 2020.
Deputy Chief of the IRGC Quds Force General Mohammad Hejazi has passed away after years of suffering from the effects of chemical weapons used during the Iraqi war of the 1980s on Iran, IRGC spokesman Ramazan Sharif says.
“This honorable martyr had been exposed to chemical agents during the Sacred Defense and had been suffering from the effects. He also contracted the coronavirus a few months ago, from which he recovered,” Sharif said Monday.

Kabul [Afghanistan], April 19 (ANI): India and Iran on Saturday said that Afghanistan would not go backwards regarding return of the Islamic Emirate used by Taliban in their five-year long rule on Kabul, reported Afghanistan Times.
"We need to put our differences aside and focus on our commons including the reality that the Islamic Emirate is an existential threat against Pakistan and a national security threat for Iran and India," said Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has urged former generals who want to stand in the presidential election scheduled for 18 June to stay away from politics.

Pushback against Biden's hopes of a breakthrough in Vienna

SHARE
Containment, rather than breakthrough, may be the theme of the talks being held in Vienna between Iran and the five permanent UN Security Council member states plus Germany. The purpose of the negotiations is to revive the nuclear deal signed by the same group of countries in 2015. In parallel, Iranian escalation against the US – a member of the so-called “P5” alongside Britain, China, France and Russia – cannot be ruled out, as such a scenario would serve Tehran’s interests ahead of its presidential election in June.
China and Russia, both allied to Iran, seem to have approached these talks slightly differently.

Why Iran sanctions are still a powerful tool

Since Joe Biden became US president, the Iranian regime has been gradually softening its position in order to resurrect the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal. This is considered a humiliation to the Islamic Republic, which is known to boast about its power, resilience and opposition to US demands.
Ahead of the Biden administration assuming office in January, the Iranian leaders took a firm stance toward the nuclear deal, believing that the new president was going to be similar to Barack Obama in terms of having a strong desire to resume the nuclear deal with Tehran. After all, Biden was vice president in the Obama administration that negotiated the JCPOA and, when he was running for president, he made it clear that he wanted to resort to diplomacy in order to bring Tehran back to the nuclear pact.
