You had incidents of africanamericans not being able to purchase land, when they would have been able to do that, because you had black soldiers who may have had a little bit of money. You had people trying to limited resources, they were not allowed to either purchase the land or rent the land. You have black people being denied the right to serve on juries. Certainly cannot vote, but the most heinous problem during this period was the apprenticeship laws. A lot of us think that black men were rounded up and jailed, if they did not have visible means of support. If they do not have employment. The real tragedy, i think, of this early period, starting right after the war into 1866 and 1867 was the apprenticeship of africanamerican children.
