Nigerian High Court Gives Air Peace 7 Days To Answer FIJ's Queries On Lagos-Anambra Flight Over Reported Engine Problem

  A Lagos High Court has made an order compelling Air Peace to answer questions raised by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) in a suit filed by the airline against the media organisation.   Air Peace filed a defamation suit numbered LD/ADR/4833/23 against FIJ over a report on the airline's flight operations from Lagos to Anambra on October 12, 2022.

The Nigerian government has promised that repatriated illicit funds would be allocated to infrastructure development, focusing on projects in vital sectors requiring substantial investment.   The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, made this known at the 6th Session of the Nigeria-US bi-national commission in Abuja on Monday.    This he said while appealing to the United States of America to repatriate more illicit funds transferred from Nigerian officials through its banking system.

The UK government has passed legislation to enable the National Crime Agency and police to seize, freeze and destroy crypto assets used by criminals.  This new law was legalised because organised criminals, including drug dealers, fraudsters and terrorists, are known to increasingly use crypto assets to launder the proceeds of crime and raise money.

A report by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), has identified Benue, Plateau and Kaduna states as the worst hit by religious killings in Nigeria.   Intersociety stated this as part of its latest report shared with SaharaReporters on Sunday and titled, "Governors In South-East Deafeningly And Dangerously Turning Igbo Into Jihadist Violence-Prone Benue, Plateau and Southern Kaduna."

A Nigerian social media influencer and YouTuber based in the United States, Mrs. Funke Ashekun has petitioned the police in Maryland and Nevada to investigate Daniel Olukoya, the General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry. She said the cleric’s activities should be investigated and decisive action should be taken to bring him to justice over his alleged misdeeds.   Ashekun alleged that Olukoya's actions go far beyond the realm of religious practice and into the realm of exploitation and abuse.

Lagos Monarch Writes Ikorodu General Hospital, Advises Female Workers To Stay At Home Over Anti-Women 'Oro' Traditional Rite

The traditional ruler of Ikorodu land in Lagos State, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi has asked all female workers at Ikorodu General Hospital not to work on May 16, 2024 because of a traditional rite, known as ‘Oro’, that will be done in the town.   This directive was given in a letter the monarch addressed to the management of the hospital, warning them to tell all their female workers to stay at home during the day slated for the rite.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are expected to visit Nigeria in May for talks on the Invictus Games, which he established to facilitate the rehabilitation of wounded and sick servicemembers and veterans.   The Defence Headquarters in a statement on Sunday expressed its “honour and delight for the acceptance of the Duke of Duchess, His Royal Highness Prince Harry and his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan to visit Nigeria in May 2024”.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has vowed to mobilise its members and embark on a mass action if the Nigerian government fails to take immediate steps to address the current fuel scarcity in the country.   The students’ body also asked the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mr Mele Kyari, to resign if he could not take decisive actions to resolve the fuel crisis.

heatwave: Jharkhand suspends classes up to Grade 8 due to sweltering heat

Jharkhand government has suspended classes up to grade 8 due to a heatwave, with classes 9 to 12 operating from 7 am to 11.30 am. The suspension applies to all schools, and a separate order will be issued for teachers' summer vacation. Heatwave conditions were recorded in 11 districts, with Seraikela recording the highest temperature. The Met department has issued a heatwave alert for 13 districts for April 30 and May 1, with no significant change in temperatures expected for the next four days.
